I need some new free wheel hubs for my 94 78series Landcruiser. Sick and tired of the Toyota ones. Need to be simple, strong, and easy to fit for a backyard mechanic with a short fuse. What do people recommend?

I use AVM on all three of my patrols. Have never played up, unlike the auto FWH that came standard on them.
BUT their one weak point is their tiny long T4 bolts that hold the ally cover on, can be prone to having the ally cover beaten up by rocks and makes it very hard to unscrew them again. Generally not an issue, but if you work your wagon hard in rock gardens they may not be for you
Are they Aisin hubs?

The present hubs are the factory ones that were modified to manual. Have worked for a few years, but the tiny stainless socket head screw to activate them aint up to the rest of the hub. And the cogged activating ring etc has worn out, big groove down the middle and iots slips as its being turned to "4WD". And theyre the biggest pita to get lined up to fit back together, so was hoping for something a little easier to work with.Quote:

Not on the Patrol version they don't. Just 6 cap screws hold the steel body onto the hub, and 6 long tiny T4 bolts hold the alloy head that houses the worm in/out mechanism.
I was thinking the last lot I replaced were a direct bolt on with their own spacer and everything required including gaskets. But didn't want to post that as it was a while ago and my memory being what it is these days haha. The job on the linked forum seems way more complicated that the steel body manual hubs I fitted, they did about 45,000 k's farm and general off road site access work with no issues including a few whoopses where the hubs made contact with stuff and got dinged but didn't fail. Last I heard were still doing the business for the new owner...

But I don't know if they are the right ones to replace the electrical jobs as a bolt on like I did. I recall they were a specially ordered set but thats about it now. The cables got left in place and snipped further up just a two-day repair job after the electrically activated one's decided to not be one day. Well kinda more like they decided to get moody and sometimes would work, other times in and out every few minutes you get the idea.
I copper grease those little T4 bastards,makes for bit easier to undo.Havnt smashed the alloy cover yet,but close.The AVMs hubs are pretty good and easy to service once a yr.I had auto hubs but twice they let me down,in the shingly soft river bed.Glad i have rear diff lock,got me out of a long walk or winching process.Quote:
