Garmin. You can get free updates through 'open maps' or something. They're much more user friendly I think, and accept different cards like 'Fresh Maps' which gives you topo type maps.

Although I guess they all offer free upgrades now.

I recently got the wife a Garmin Driveassist 51 LMTs - only a 5 inch screen but has the dashcam built into it.

Do you have a smart phone?
Try the Waze ap....that's if this is used in NZ?
Good thing about this is that it will see if you have traffic ahead and divert to faster route. Used here in the UK and Europe as well as in the States. Bloody good as you always have it on you. Also you can see if a taxi is trying it on.

I recently bought a navman move85LM from the wharewhare for $139. It was fine on a recent trip to aussie, gives speed warnings and has lifetime aus and nz map upgrades. I don't see the point in burying a lot of cash into one of these as Cellphones apps are overtaking incar GPS's

    This is the obvious choice!

I feel like I am back in the early 2000s when I read the other options!

    but...

from a phone vs incar review site....
Most apps that use 3/4G connectivity, gradually download portions of the map as you require them, to save space on your smartphone storage. Though handy, this puts you at the mercy of mobile networks which are prone to dropouts depending on your carrier and location. Drive away from an urban centre and things can become spotty. Head into a tunnel and the mobile network may die altogether. Plus If you are overseas and roaming....

Some let you download an entire map over WiFi, so you can get around without worrying about your 3/4G connection. The downside is that a country or state map will take up a large chunk of storage on your phone. Plus, while almost all GPS apps support 3/4G, far fewer give you the option to download maps for use in offline mode.
