    Blue smoke....

Just driving down a hill in the landcruiser 80 series in low range, second gear. Heaps of blue smoke out the back, changed up to drive and it was better but still there. Got home and had a quick look, plenty of oil but a few bubbles in it, plenty of water in radiator, and transmission fluid. Seemed like choke ws on but nope checked that and it's working. Had a new head and top end replaced last year so not to worried about the bubbles in oil.

Anyone got ideas as to why a diesel will start putting out blue smoke all of a sudden?

I've always thought blue smoke was buggered piston rings. I'm not a mechanics left nut though.

Hmmm could be, would have thought they were checked when they did the new head. Going to town next week for transmission service and a few other things... Guess it's going to the garage as well, bloody things starting to be a money pit

Gravel 2Nd gear doing 20km/h not too bad at all. Prefer driving it down than braking all the way.

so , if you ever follow cars down a long hill and at the bottom the accelrate away they blow blue smoke (burnt oil) , when you are using the motor to slow your descent or labour a bit harder , you can draw oil past the guides /valves , ... especially on older cars , ... i wouldnt worry about it unless she is blowing all the time , it happens to most cars after a descent ... watch the cars in front of you next time ....

Just make sure you check the oil reguarly and keep driving it. Pretty normal for an older engine.

I'd say the rings are tired, valve guide seals should've been replaced when you had the head done. Like @veitnamcam says, to fix would be big money.
