A set of chains for front and back will get you out of most mud holes and a small Tirfor hand winch for when your really in the shit. I have chains fitted to the farm SJ413 rear, all the time over winter. With a small Tirfor type winch with wire rope and strops under the seat. The rope is the same size as a boat winch has and about 15m long with a hook at one end.
Wire strainers and a longer length of chain. Put a proper snog hook on the chain tho.
You should also carry a proper recovery strap with dated shackles. That way another vehicle can snatch tow you out.
Don't use wire or chain for snatch recoveries.
Let's try snig hook. No kissing involved.
Rated shackles. Sheesh. Predictive text. It's awesome. Not
I was thinking some tubular webbing, but wanted to make sure it was strong enough before i trusted it. When i used to clim we used stuff rated for 2.2 kn but whether it would be up to the task of moving a vehicle is the question. Do any of you guys know a good dealer for reasonable prices for strops etc?

Keep your re overt gear together in a bag away from sunlight and dirt.
Assorted webbing, rope that's fit for a washing line or whatever is not worth the risk: remember if you're truly stuck you're not pulling just two tonnes plus combined vehicle weights. You're pulling the sucky mud too. Flying snapped (even light) ropes are lethal. No ifs or buts. I've seen it.
Yes we're spending money and you're on a budget like many of us. Start slow. Accumulate the right stuff. Always ask is it safe.
Good gear is an investment that will last years longer than your present vehicle.
Recovery. I hate my touch screen. It has nothing to do with sticky fingers after my date slice either....
We pulled our mates wagon just like yours which was teetering on a edge of a 40m straight gorge off with our 4 wheelers but it slid and just about pulled us all over. This was about 4 months ago and I hate driving past it.Best trick I heard was to use 12mm rope as snow chains. When used just cut them off.
I would have to agree with you. Im not out hunting for holes to put my new truck in and am rather more inclined to be prepared for the worst case scenario while were out exploring. Ill have to buy bit by bit i think, much like reloading began. A part a month lol

im no expert but all ive got is a decent length of chain with snig hooks a winch extension strop a couple of rated bow shackles a fold up spade an axe and a high lift jack the high lift jack can be used as a hand winch its slow but it works
A snatch block can be very handy too
And a chain saw comes in handy sometimes as well
I used to carry a chainsaw in the surf. It was great even for clearing scrub on formed tracks.

You want 2 shackles and a stretchy strop to put energy into when trying to get another truck out with your truck. If its really bottomed however it will be so sticky you will need a 20+toinne catepillar low loader and chains, been there done that, or a lot of shovels.
Since you are in Wellington have you done the 4wd's clubs courses? well worth it.
I dont plan on pulling any one with the jimny, i am more inclined to just make sure im sorted if i do find myself in some bad terrain. I think i would pull a quad with a jimny and thats it. Otherwise i just see it as a risk to my own vehicle.

Just having the gear can help others aswell if there is some one else there but with no gear. I have found that a few times.

Aside from the usual D bolts and towing strops, I reckon the two must haves are a tirfor and a hi lift jack. Keep an eye out for the older steel cased tirfors, they are much stronger than the modern alloy rip offs.
Two other hints, make sure your recovery points on your truck are up to scratch, nothing worse than ripping bits off the wagon. And don't fall for getting a folding mini shovel, they are worthless when they break (which they do). A big full length shovel is the best, preferably metal handled so you can use it as a handle extension on the tirfor
Was always taught on recovery courses in the army the best recovery tool you can ever have is a good shovel

The most useful things I've got is a square of ply to put under the jack to stop it sinking, and a good spade. Followed by snow chains. That will get you out of most situations unless you are trying really hard to get stuck
I've carried strops for years and only used them to pull out other people, hi-lift jacks are great if you have points strong enough to lift off and can double as a winch but need to carry all the right bits
your jimny might weigh fuck all, but youll need to have rated gear to cover all weights of vehicle I reckon around 4000kg plus is a good minimum
I have used that trick the other day on my escudo . Could not climb a wet hill and was stuck in a gorge. Got the nylon rope out, and wrapped it around the rear tyres making sure that during the traction the rope was not gona tear the inlet valves.
Worked like charm. I have kept those to pieces of rope for next time I get stuck. Meanwhile I am on the look out for some good tyres ...:-)
I carry snatch strops ,straight tow strop and two chains one rated 1.5tonand other 2ton.also have hilift jack ,but onboard 2ton 4ton and 6ton hyraulic jacks.shovel with manuka handleunlikely to break .plus jumper leads etc etc-all in a bloody great tin coffin in the back of the pathfinder-yep ive manged to get seriously "bogged" x3 and twice that kit did the job no worries .other time was sitting in quicksand mud up to my running boards and that needed a bloody great cockies tractor with a chain used to extract excavators!
with virtually the whole area being this shitty soup it was marginal at least in Ts opinion so a huge bloody effort from tractor and truck and the old bitch staggered out like a wet daggy arsed ewe.lesson to all do not fuck round at wolfes RD in midwinter when its been raining like 40bastards!
ive got a little liteweight electric winch but it isnt really frontline. Oh and ive added heavy plywood plates for under the jacks. them plus axle stands got me off a bloody great log which jammed under the diff in the rakaia riverbed!GSPfollower was there -is a wonderful slave and does a great commentary. also extracted me when i tried submarining in the pathfinder also in the rakaia.

From the 4 minute mark, all you need for a recovery.
