Thread: Classic car Rego

Hi bit of a weird topic but I was thinking is classic car regos still a thing? You used to be able to get your car registered as a classic once it turned 25years old and get cheap Rego (I think there might have been a limit on how many ks per year you do too) which my 1990 hilux falls well into the 25 year old category which technically its a classic haha.
Just the scottish heritage in me trying to save money where I can

I have a Mitsi L300 that has just turned 40yrs old and the rego is now $47 pa. I did not apply....it just happened automatically. NZTA would not consider any reduction until it reached 40yrs.......I think in your case the same will apply.

Classic car designation may apply for insurance and maybe market prices for rare examples but not registration methinks.

Yep, 40yrs. Applies to motorbikes etc as well.

40yrs=car is Vintage or classic.My father was one of the founding members of a vintage car club many yrs ago.Him being a 1930s mechanic by trade was a valuable asset to the club in its early days.

Yes, the oldest one in the fleet

The others will follow a year or so later

So still 7.5 years to go. Im only halfway to a 1000,000ks so the hilux should have a few more years haha. As long as they dont change the laws and ban diesel vehicles or something.

And if your rego runs out in March for example and you had the vehicle off the road until September and you go to rego it then?

You won’t have to ‘back date’ the rego until March, it just starts again from September.

Unlike with a ‘modern’ vehicle where the rego would have to go back to March. (Unless you had put the rego on ‘hood’)

Hopefully this is as clear as I think it is.

I thought classic was 20 years. Does that mean you can't register it as a classic until 25 years?

Lucky a few of us here run 1990's diesel clunkers that will run just fine on fish n chip oil.

Aged out cooking oil, rancid peanut oil and good old chinese takeaway fat - no worries... Oh, and a tank heater.

Yep, a few tricks to using the stuff for sure. Filtering and heating to expel all the water out of it for sure, prior to it ever getting near a fuel tank, or out with the Methanol and a shitload of plumbing and crack it into bio diesel.
