    Coatings for Ali boat

A mate is building a 4.5 mt ali custom boat and is considering the options for adding colour coating to the whole thing.
Plan A is to have it powder coated and then (possibly) clear coated with a new nano process.
Anyone here got experience or suggestions for other options ?

My suggestion is don't put any colour on it at all. Defeats the purpose of having a alloy boat if you have to be careful not to scratch it.

My Jetboat was painted alloy and I was always getting wound up when a mark was added to it by persons other than myself.
A cobber has the same boat with a simple paint job and doesnt give a toss about its cosmetics. As long as it does what he bought it for, hes happy.

I am really keen to see a pic of @longrange308 boat build?? I hear it is a pretty awesome effort for a nut strangler

It aint dribble and there will only be the top of the firemans helmet leaving a mark. You must have seen Abes effort. He struggled to fill a 20mm objective.

    Pics of boat please???

Happy to get a system written up through work that you could apply? Do you have access to a spray unit?

nzfubz. Thanks for the offer, but the boat owner is looking to get the work done as part of the build package up here in central NI. He most definately wont be doing it himself.

No problem, I deal daily with Carboline (Altex) so if you wanted recommendations of coatings applicators in the area I'm happy to ask the question

the only thing im concidering coulour wise is a vinal sticker on the cuddy of the boat Im planning to get,
that way when it bubbles If it does its a simple removal process, plus my brother is a vinal layer and will do it for me for zip

may not be suitable for your application

Paint the keel with slide, and and the top deck up with colour, and be prepared for it to get marked
Big difference between a pretty painted boat and one that gets a workout.

Personally I'm going to just paint the top deck and screen on mine.

When i was at sanfords we applied a 4 year paint system to the hull i cant remember all the technical bs but the base was black like a tar then applied the base coats and finally the top coats
2 pot Enamel paint i think it was, it might work ok on aluminium allowing the paint to flex a bit with the hull it was Altex coating paint. @Pengy give altex in Tauranga a call they would be best qualified to answer your questions.
