In a predicament at the moment. Looking for a Ute for my everyday car. Would like 4x4 for hunting and on the farm but not entirely necessary, also must be able to tow race trailer. Have been advised by alot of people to stay away from diesels because of RUC, extra servicing and higher rego cost, but there just arnt as many petrol utes out there to chose from. Any advice would be appreciated, do you find it more expensive, hassle to run a diesel compared to a petrol? cheers Josh
Better torque at lower revs from the diesel may suit you more than a petrol.
Lower fuel consumption can offset RUC and rego costs. The modern diesel service interval may be 15000 km so spreads the cost out.
Try before you buy - find what suits your budget. Don't forget to look outside of the main brands.
SsangYong has a double cab in either diesel or petrol.
If you are doing high kms then a diesel works out much the same as a petrol cost wise. For towing- have always used petrol vehicles to tow our race car- (dragster in covered trailer).
Depends on what you are looking at, price range, etc. My vote would be for petrol.
I have just changed from a diesel to a petrol, I found diesel more expensive with road user charges. I just drove to Christchurch a week ago in the new petrol wagon, from home to my destination it cost $20 more in fuel than the diesel would have, but no road user charges for the petrol.
From another forum that discussed this at great length, I seem to recall that unless you are doing 30 k plus per year, there is no difference in running costs. This was including service costs, ruc etc etc , and the numbers had been crunched by a guy who managed big national fleets.
I reckon my Territory Ghia petrol is cheaper to run than my 2000 Prado diesel, without the cost of ruc's and servicing

I been cheating on the RUC............... I pull the speedo cable out and then using my GPS I worked out the correct RPM in 4th for 50kph (1750rpm) and 100kph in 5th (2750rpm)
Put the cable back in a fortnight before the warrants due :thumbsup:

Diesel all the way for me. I like the low end torque, reliability, efficiency of the diesel cycle, no HT leads/dizzy to get wet and stop you. Over the last 20 years the cost benefit of running diesel has reduced a lot. Back then diesel was less than half the price of petrol.
I love the surge of torque from a turbo diesel. I am not sold they are the cheapest to run tho.
ironically, the more economical your modern diesel is the worse the numbers look for diesel km tax.
Someone needs to run the numbers on a few real world vehicles and driving.
Was costing me $60 in diesel per week in my 3.1L Turbo 94 isuzu bighorn to travel from Tauranga to Te Awamutu and back to tauranga to where I was staying as well as go to work in Te puke fuel up days were wednesday nights, I just got my rego form in the mail with the new costs to rego a diesel and has come down to to $273.36 per year for rego so I was quite surprised on how much the rego cost has come down.

Good wagons generally but check for whining under load in 5th especially but all gears.

The problem there is the first gear is miles too high not the revs. My 4.2 liter turbo diesels peak tourqe is up round 2200rpm
I've been driving a number of Mercedes Sprinters around of late with a little 2.2l euro diesel and am impressed with the performance and economy. Loaded with 11 large adults and heaps of gear it is no slug and still maintains good performance/economy. The big thing is a good gearbox/engine match and I have to say that the autos are great at turning power to torque with the torque converter. This hurts me to say this because I generally hate autos and only bought one because my left leg kept cutting out on me leaving me stuck on the side of the road. I havent driven the nissan or amorok tho the amorok is often said to be too high geared for off road use, auto hiluxes have a very tall 1st as do the manuals and I can definitely see how you could have your problem with one of them as they just wont get moving off the line even empty on the flat.
