ECU remap or chip or neither?

Hello all, what's the current thinking on this?

Subject vehicle is 2009 3.2 Mitsi Triton auto 140,000 km. Runs fine, but I feel not really getting the full benefit of the 3.2, and a tad thirsty too. I have already turned off EGR with an electronic mod, otherwise it's stock as far as I know.

Am I really going to gain much power/economy by chip or remap? What are the advantages, disadvantages & risks of each option? I've tried researching online but am bamboozled by the numbers and competing claims of the providers. Any real-life advice welcome. cheers
