Used to do it with the wee 120s and the 3 wheelers.... It involved blowing up the shit out of the tire.... More air sir moooorrrreeeee!!!!!
Anything will float as long as the weight of the object is lighter than the weight of the water that the object displaces. So either biff the dog off the quad or put the quad on a boat, Either one will work!
yeah mate be keen on feedback on this need to do thompsoms track !!! haha
Like I said blow the tire up with shitloads a air.... Duhhhhh.... We used a cross the rangitata all da time like this lol
dont try it in a flooded creek with 5 packs on - atv, submarine, atv, submarine in that order as it rolled down the creek with me hanging onto the back:D

Note the snorkels
You'd be more of a "c" cup wouldn't you?:D
It would depend entirely on the quad and its tires and the weight of its rider whether it would fully float or not.
ARdave here is a thought. As an added measure strap an empty 20 litre water container low on to the front and the back of the quad. That will displace forty kilos of water and as water weighs a kilo per litre that would give you an extra forty kilos of lift (flotation).
haha cool will be sitting there with our quads biggest boggiest mud puddle ya ever seen ,,,will send me mate in first with the words following the Big bad bob said shell be sweet:pacman:,,,,might go track down a good compressor today
The twenty ltr container is the bees knees. My old mate and myself would strap on 6 containers to the quad, two on each side, one on the back and one on the front.
We then hung on and waded the deeper crossings pushing the bike, one on the top side and one at the rear.We did this many times.
it would be quicker for you to nip over the kaimais and go in from the ykato side...thompsons is 22 kms long and you can easy cover 11 kms from ykato side...which is 7 to the top and 4 down the bay side...we rode horses over about 3 weeks ago and there is no way a quad would get through some of the holes...we are riding over again on the 29th if you want to come have a look from horse back.
yeah been that way a few times over the last few months some of the bogs are getting pretty shocking we we went up Te Aroha side and then bout half way down the bay side haha pretty much just before it turns really bad!!!! ,,,,,was getting dark so we headed back,,,,
Fark be pretty bloody cool on horseback!!
Understand that but if all that Baldbob did was pump the tyres and the quad went from sinking to floating then the physics tell me that something about the tyres size had to change (i.e. an increased amount of water was displaced). A bit like a scuba diver using a bouyancy compensator to rise from the bottom, the air was always there (in the tank) but it is not until it is released into the compensator that a greater amount of water is displaced thereby causing flotation.
I was just saying, that 'my' quad tyres dont do shit with pressure...
In fact if the tyres aren't changing shape and you are still putting air in then it will have the opposite effect. Not by much though.
keen! lol a jet boat might be a better option. Floaty bits (tyres) go to top and heavy bit goes down in deep water...and if it aint deep enough your not floating!
OK guys, we are coming at this all wrong. ARdave, stuff the science, build a ramp, hit it at speed and jump the bloody river.
Or forget the ramp and aqua plane across!
put a 2hp outboard on the carry tray and youll be good to go.
then just stick to the river, its much smoother than bouncing up river beds.
that rangitata river just about claimed my hilux, rivers in flood are not to be messed with
Response too all above I'm going to get the boat out tommorrow
