gearbox choices for v8 hilux

DON'T put a manual in it. Put an auto box in it and you can mod it to allow manual control of the gears. It will save you endless strife in the long run and you can stick to Toyota part and popular adapter systems.
The toyo V8 is a popular choice but it doesn't leave much room under the bonnet for extra batteries etc.
Are you planning on a PTO as well for winch or? If you are keen on the winch challenges have a think about weight distribution as well - front/rear, most people worry about overall weight but not where is.

i have thought about an auto for in water etc what can i use one from? was thinking maybe a hydraulic winch iv been told theyre way faster. as for batteries etc i can always make a holder somewhere else for them. im after complete reliability if there is such a thing

Nothing will fuck an auto quicker than getting water in it, if you go that way make sure it is well sealed and vented.

ok ill scrap the auto idea then. the internet is a bastard of a place, one says do this, the other says do that. so far iv seen r series is best to use....

Autos are good and softer on the driveline/no clutch to get wet easyer to roll on the power.
Just don't let water get in them, do input and output bearings and seals minimum before installation and vent to the driest point.

which auto box should i look at ones out of a surf or is there a adapter to the one that comes with the 1uz? i like the idea of easier on the drive line and no need to button off when changing gear

just found a good build someone has done using the original 1uz auto box adapted to a surf auto transfer case. that looks like the go for now

They are a number of RWD Toyotas that used the V8 in them to choose from.
Hydraulic winch can be very quick but also more expensive than a PTO system. You also need to allow for a tank for extra fluid. I haven't raced for over 6yrs so I'm out of touch with what is flavour of the month.
Winch speed isn't the most important thing, rather how it's used, and the better you drive the less you need to use it.
Batteries in a hilux best located where the spare wheel sits behind the rear axle. Mid mounted winch with helps with weight distribution. I the first wagon I built we had close to 50/50 weight front/rear, great for traction.

what come out with a PTO system? if you dont mind im gonna be annoying and ask you lots of questions

Well you would need a PTO to run a pump for a hydraulic winch, otherwise a standard Toyota PTO landcruiser winch would work assuming you fit a cruiser gearbox. You can get a bit more control out of the hydraulic once you are used to it. I've seen electric motors converted to hydraulic as well as the standard ones. Downside to both systems is they don't work if the engine isn't going so you need a backup electric winch. The Aussies were using 24V through a 12v winch but the motors overheat. All depends how competitive you want to be, I only did it for fun, spent more time setting tracks than anything else :D

I ran mine off the crank. In line. Air ram to engage and disengage tho really had tm turn it off to let it go in nice not so much of a issue. Mid mounted winch, 2 speed also on air rams went from 4t pull at 1.2m/s flick it over had 12t at .5m/s. If you go hydro it is the way to get reliable fast set up but will cost alot. . . . Alot of $$$$ unless you have someone in the know for parts etc. Mine all up was around 3k but got alot of bits for bugger all in my field of work or able to fix what wouldn't have been cost effective to fix in time. I had piston pump and drive unit off a waratah adds weight as well would have been maybe 150kg plus? But was over the back where I needed more.

Go hydro do it right keep it covered up no one can see till you start to winch amd people think your back driving 👍
