    Guns in Caravans

Hey Team, Looking at doing a loop of NZ for 6-12 months and would like to take my rifle with me, does anyone know if its ok to have a rifle in a locked cabinet or what have you in a caravan? or is it a no no with the police?

The rules were recently clarified, and yes, you can have a rifle in a caravan, but if I recall correctly the security needs to be inspected by a member of the police.

    From the police website...

Secure storage of firearms and ammunition in mobile homes (regulation 19A)

Firearms and ammunition may only be stored in a mobile home, campervan, or caravan unit, if the vehicle or unit is being used as a temporary or permanent home; and the licence holder has appropriate storage that has been inspected and approved by Police.

I know someone who lives in a caravan and has a lockbox installed, bolted to the structure of the caravan. It’s all good. As mentioned, get your AO to give it a thumbs up so you don’t run into any issues in your travels.

One area of firearms legislation where things have actually got better. Be happy with the wins.

its legal after inspection by plod, make sure the safe is bolted thru the floor with a plate on the underside. caravan floors are flimsy at best, the pommy ones are usually ultra thin ply with closed cell foam between them.

I'm actually thinking I might see if bolting one of these Supermax Heavy Duty Double Rifle Case 52" in the caravan would be enough and then use trigger locks as well as locking the case. Wanting to keep it lightweight as for a UK caravan.

That's a very fair point, be a bastard to hit a pothole and find the safe has dropped clean through... The Police fitout in the back of their vehicles are (I believe) a hardened metal which is thinner and therefore lighter than the usual house spec safe. Could be an option to look into, as it would be advantageous to make the thing as light as possible given the spec and requirements.

Hey thats a good point, are you looking at those "Gun cases"? if so do let me know the outcome as obviously bolting a steel gun cab isnt ideal when tying to manage weight in a caravan.

I emailed the Christchurch arms officer the following question, his answer is below.

we are going to be living in our caravan for a few months on the road if our house sells.

I have looking at storage options for a rifle possibly two but unsure yet.

I wondered if I could bolt something like either of these options to the floor under the bed and also use trigger locks as well.

    Supermax case

    Aluminium case

I am just trying to think of some ideas that are not heavy like a metal safe would be.

    Thanks for your time.

This is the response from the Christchurch arms officer

    Kia ora Happy Jack

Please refer to section 3.2 of the document in this link: Link here

You will note that there is no specific requirement for a metal safe to be used.
