Help choosing a new wagon - Vitara, Pajero etc

Looking at selling the Hilux and getting something that's cheaper to run. Would like to be able to retain some off road ability, mostly just light stuff. I don't go out of my way to do four wheel driving anymore. Been thinking about getting a Vitara/Escudo, Pajero or something similar. Thinking of going petrol. Don't really know anything about these kinds of vehicles. What else is available in this class? Are there any time bombs I should steer clear of? Looking to spend between $6-8K if I end up selling the lux. 99% of my driving is on road.

    Flag the escudo...
If a diesel lux is too expensive then pedal power will prob be your only option.
By the time you work out any mpg saving you have well eaten it up in the difference in fuel costs.
What are you getting out of the Lux and what engine?

2.8 gets about 350-400KM out of a tank. Might help if I ditch the mud tyres and steel rims. And get the injectors recon'd. Maybe. Rego is a fisting.

When I went from alloys and little road tyres to steel rims and 31" MT's it felt like I was dragging an anchor. Lost 100km per tank. I shit you not.

Old man gets almost 800 out of my Navara.. I get 600 if I'm lucky.
    No speeding - 100km
Most variance in fuel consumption is between stationary and 100km.
The black boxes that quote better mileage do it mainly from acceleration - get you there in 1/2 the time, use 1/2 the amount of fuel getting there. Long distance cruise is the same
