Thread: Hilux air vent controls jammed

Hi All

Recently bought a 2005 Sr5 hilux. a few weeks later the vent control jammed. I called the old owner and he said he had no issues with it.
I then noticed a .22 case against the window.
So im pretty confident a case has fallen down. No biggie i thought, I can handle cool air on my feet!
But recently i noticed condensation in it each morning. And today the carpet under the mats was wet.
On a 3 hr drive, I notice the carpet had water on it.
I had a look under the console on the passenger side and I can see water dripping constantly out.
So, would the two problems be related? And Am I best to take it to toyota to fix?

It happens, the 22lr case would be the perfect size to block the drain hole too! Try get into the airbox and have a fish around, compressed air and blow the bugger out from under the vehicle via the drain pipe poking through the firewall, that sort of thing. One Camry I had in for same thing, I ended up sawing a neatish hole in the side of the airbox to get the small stone that had got in somehow ( as it needed to be removed to split in two to get the bugger out, which was a dash out job ), then plastic welded the sawn-out patch back in.

I can see the airbox, and when I try turn the air vent dial I can see the cables get jammed.
I will see how I can get on trying to get into it.

What sort of plastic is it? Pop up a picture perhaps

The time I did have what I assume was a 22 case go down the front vent of my same vintage hilux, it pissed me off no end when you used the heater or ac. It rattled like fuck. And iirc it did jam the direction knob form a couple of settings for a while

It either blew out or just found a place to rest after a while.

Wet carpet is blocked ac drain from evaporator. Find drain end in wheelbwellbor under, compressed air up it

We see this problem all the time at work. Unfortuneately its not a simple fix. Bloody 22 shells!!
Seeing as brass isn't magnetic, its a balls deep job.
First step is taking the top half of the dash off, Pretty straight forward to do. Then its try and fish the shells out with a bit of wire.
If that fails its a massive job. Entire dash out, AC degassed and whole heater box out and stripped. Last 1 took me like 12 hrs start to finish.

A shirt over the vents when out shooting or if you want a more permanent fix, take the dash top off and glue whitebait netting over the vents in the dash.

Another thing is the mechanical linkages on the drivers side of the heater box (accessible easily in drivers foot well area) can get all jammed up with gunk and crap. A good blow out and spray with silicon spray can help.
Don't try and force the controls or they break the tiny cables
That linkage set up needs to be timed correctly to work as well.

Bit of success today in sussing out the water leak.
blocked hose from the aircon unit. Once i poked a wire up it it pissed out.
Thanks to Cambo's advice I was able to take the whole dash apart and create a massive mess!
I couldn't find what was causing the jam despite find a couple of cases.
Somehow I managed to put it all back together.

@WhistlingWings come on don't be shy chuck up a photo of the before and after oh and don't leave out the new bucket of spares that you have now got that you didn't have before

Pics to come. And it should go faster now its a lot lighter
