How many CCA do Outboards require to start?
I have a Johnson 1977 85hp that can be hard to start.
I am looking to replace the current battery which came out of a hilux a while ago.
When new it was 530 CCA.

I would have thought that would be OK, go for a gel battery and keep it on a good quality trickle charger 24/7

I would agree but bigger is always better too. I run a 2 battery system with independent charging on each

I will look into the price difference between a 530 CCA and say 650 CCA and decide. If the battery is new and looked after rather than half tired like @Rushy I am hoping it should be good to go.

I like the idea of a second battery and was going to have one up front for electronics to run off.
Is it a good idea to have the "House" battery ready to boost the starting battery if it needs to for some reason? If so what size cable would be able to carry enough juice to help?

Thats what I have one battery purely for Start / Winch and everything else comes off the 140AH Deep Cycle. I have an "Emergency Parallel" Switch fitted in the event the start battery fails but this is unlikely (given the Start battery is only for motor and winch is only operated with motor running) but its there just in case.
Both batteries are down back of boat with 5mm2 2 core from Deep Cycle supplying electronics etc up front.
Hope that helps with a older motor you might need a vsr if you only have a single charging circuit

Your house battery would have to be as big, so put it at the rear as well and run smaller cables to your electronics, you'll need a switch inline so you can charge both from the outboard

Ok. I was thinking of putting battery up front to help level it out. It's a bit bum heavy atm.
I was thinking run the motor and bilge off starter battery. And cabin light, depth sounder and radio off house.
I will think this over a while
