Interesting, Govt looking to move vintage cars to annual WOF...

I see tonight that the Govt will look to move vintage and older cars (older then 40 years) to annual WOF same as vehicles newer that 2000.

Makes sense to me, although what this will mean in effect as there is a 15-year period over which all vehicles on a 6-month WOF end up on annual if they don't get written off first.

I'm wondering why they don't just say stuff it, and just move everything to distance-based checks say every 15000 or 20000Km... The antique vehicles that don't do big km's in a year in most cases just don't need the checks every 6 months, just aren't doing the miles to get the wear up.

Other vehicles like 4x4's that get used hard in some cases need a check after each outing so doing the checks on a time basis just doesn't make sense. I remember the 'hands off the wof' campaign, and the foretelling of doom and gloom with the change to annual WOF and the first wof after 3 years, nothing went bad there!

What do we think for the hunting hacks and the like, would changing to a 6 month wof make much of a difference?

I’m a bit surprised they’re still using 2000 as the cut-off, and not just running a moving line of 20 years of age or similar for shifting to 6-monthly.

They don't even have WOF here in W.A, there doesn't seem to be any increased incidents either.

That’s a thing here too, lots of people do it.

Back to the OP, I tend to agree with the general point of your post, there are many exceptions that point toward the current time based system not being as fit for purpose as it could be. My 1990 roadend Corolla clocks up much less kms than our modern one, and with yearly wigs, would still pass more easily than the modern one.

Potentially a similar system to servicing regime could bring the best of both worlds (once per year or every 20000km whichever comes first) granted, the consumer would still have to organise an interim service, but at least every second service would be synced wof, so both could be done in one visit.

$80 a WOF or so now, difference between $1600 and 60 odd hours (assuming 3 hours lost per wof) and $800 and 30 hours on an annual basis... It adds up.

I like the Aussie system where there are no WOF checks until you have an accident or get stopped for something stupid. If your vehicle doesn't pass you have no insurance cover and you are fully liable, which can be offset by comprehensive compulsory insurance.

Just failed a $310 COF at Greymouth (Mordor) for brake imbalance, Wtf Just spent $1500 0n new cylinders. 1 COF ago. Should have gone over Arthur's first. Passed next visit, without doing anything other than giving them a good workout. Still had to pay for recheck because of need to use brake monitor again. AND we struggle because of the cost of living.

Mine ran out today, last time it was a drive shaft and a windscreen, first time it had failed in 230,000 ks. What a bloody rip off WoFs are, checked by unqualified “mechanics”

Every two years here in Norway. Vehicles over 50 years old are exempt.

No WOF for motorbikes or trailers.
