The new shit tends to be more shit than the old shit when it comes to 4x4's doing actual 4x4 shit unless you spend about 50% of the purchase price on upgrading shit. In the ~3l class of the mid 90's I think the best of them would be the Isuzus (Bighorn/mu). Their engines and running gear are solid and well proven and their prices have gone up considerably over the last couple of years. Similar to the Hilux's of the same era. The Bighorns are much roomier inside than the Navara/Hilux double cabs.
