Just bought a new hunting wagon.

Brother and I have been looking for a cheap 4wd or Awd vehicle that we can take hunting, where we dont wish to take our good cars.

Really not looking for a real off-roader. Just something that dosnt cost much to buy or run, That we can take down a few old logging roads in reasonable repair, or across paddocks, and also that we can leave on the roadside for a day or two and not be concerned about coming back to find it damaged or gone.

Was looking around a car yard the other day and passed a Nissan Juke and really was surprised to find it was not just Awd, but selectable 2wd/4wd as well.

We looked at it, and reasonable ground clearance, short wheel base, with not much hanging over either end, peppy little 1.6 turbo and cheaper than most other rav4 Suzuki type similar vehicles.

So we took the risk and Now I guess will find out how it will actually go. Aim is too keep its on road licences for a couple or 3 of years before it becomes the next farm ATV.

Anyone used one? any pros and cons worth knowing about?

Its 2011, I presume it does have a CVT.

I like your logic whanahuia, plenty of places in north island where this vehicle would be perfect and no sweat if it gets damaged or pinched should be cheap insurance too.
No need to outlay big dollars on extreme off roading vehicle, plenty of game within walking distance of most carparks...
and most carparks are full of expensive 4x4s with owners scared to scratch the paint work, so what's with need to throw dollars away.
Something I could go for myself, so will await for a review.

Maybe a manual for me though, I see the juke has that option.

Can't see anyone stealing it, so that's another good thing...might break a window and steal my handbag though:)

But, if you avoid everything with a CVT you're fast running out of options in the smaller vehicles. Only the full size seem to have real gearboxes now, and if you prefer manual well, you're an obsolete fossil aren't you!

To be honest, Ive been told to avoid nearly every vehicle other than Hilux. Mitsi's have issues with shocks, Suzuki and Honda with trans- presume same type of issue, Ford... lets not go there... From what Ive seen the best thing to do is change the oil in transmission now, and then again every 40,000 ks. It's not going to be doing many long trips so 40,000 Ks is likely close to 3 years anyway.

And I can buy 3 or more of these for the cost of similar age Hilux.

Yep, we had dramas with the shocks in the wifes outlander - from brand new that was and a 2021 vintage. I suspect that part of the issue is those of us who are used to commercial and semi-commercial suspension get into those Auckland billiard table set up vehicles and think that they flop all over the road and there's nothing holding the wheels on!

I would not even recommend hilux to be brutally honest - you are paying a shitload for a reputation and they have their share of faults and dodgy bloody shark servicing outfits. Brakes, engine longevity, driveshafts and things like electrics/electronics and bits that bolt onto the engine have all given issues in the past.

Like anything, if you are attentive, get the thing serviced on time and also guide the technicians to investigate things as or if you become aware something has changed you stand the best chance of getting a good run out of whatever vehicle you end up with. Also you need a small amount of luck to get a good one and not have anything spontaneously disassemble itself at a critical moment...

There are always the things that go wrong that aren't related to the brand of vehicle, like my Ranger having the engine management computer (PCM) suffer a failing sensor 5V voltage output regulator that was surging and spiking everything that did something or had a CANBus hub in it that was required to pass a message to something else from an actuator or sensor. That wasn't a Ford (or Mazda) failure - that was damn Bosch and could have happened to any vehicle built with their control gear. Was an utter bitch to track down though, as the unstable voltage it was outputting was making the PCM think that every sensor was still AOK when it was not even powering up. Amazing the thing was still starting and running to be honest.

I've had 3 used CVT cars (shopping baskets) now, between them I have personally driven over 400,000km and they did a total of 670,000km. I'm a bit of a rough bugger behind the wheel but all the CVTs all held up well. They wouldn't like shock loads like river rocks as Trout said.
