Landcruiser 1hdt steep incline low idle/stop

Ok I have been lucky enough to get the opportunity buy the FIL's 1993 80 series. It's a factory manual with factory front and rear lockers. It's probably the most grandpa spec 80 you will find. It's had a lot of money spent on it before I got it, pump and injectors done among lots of other work.

Well, I was trying it out on a fairly steep farm track the other day which was very rough and run out of traction. No problem foot on brake, put lockers in. Foot off the throttle truck drops back to idyll then stops! Took a bit of turning over to get going again as well, when normally it barely turns over before starting. Got it going and carried on up to top of track.

So done a bit of internet digging and apparently this can be a thing with this set up. What say you all? Worked out a fix? Know what is causing it? Things I need to check?

BIL is a diesel injection technician by trade so have access to skilled help if over my pay grade.

How much fuel was in the tank? Wondering if it was starved with fuel away from the tank pickup on the steep hill.

Just under half

Pulling out the hand throttle and learning to jam your foot sideways against door so doesn't bounce will help a lot too. Doesn't allow revs to drop that last bit.

Yeah, good point. I could just turn up hand throttle in those situations. Would like to fix the problem if its solvable.

It also helps no end on bouldery ground when your rocking n rolling along.

The injector pump housings wear and the advance pistons also.

Most ignore that when they're overhauled. Or they just shim up the advance piston spring so to works harder. Don't know why. Prob just lazy.

yes standard practice on the tractors on steep rough stuff stops ones foot bouncing up and down much better control just feather hand throttle

Mine used to do that too....not stall but very very low idle on steep incline. Rebuilt pump,full recon engine.

Im no machanic,maybe engage lockers before trying step hill.

This was happening with mine, amongst all the usual pump and injector issues I also noted the rings were pretty worn, but it wasn’t displaying any signs bar being a bit sluggish which I put down to the pump and injectors, so be sure to have a good look.

One unspoken issue with Toyota 1H series of motors is that they are so reliable, wear components often get pushed past date or forgotten about as others here have mentioned, people just take them for granted, a bad mix of Toyota tuff and she’ll be right, some I’ve seen for sale have clearly been begging for death since 2001 yet still haul the horses with no argument.

At the end of they day, yes they exceed common reliability norms, but still need the same care and attention as any other engine.

I know it’s not applicable to you at this stage, but in some cases these donks have done 30 years or half a mill or more with little more than one set of injectors and some oil and maybe some BEB

At the end of the day paying retail and getting a full Monty rebuild, and then actually sticking to a service schedule for components will probably net another 35+ if the body doesn’t rot out on you! 15k odd isn’t a lot with the miles and smiles they generate

Motor was rebuilt, including new head ex Japan (not sure if old boy cooked it or did cambelt as why new head?) new clutch and rebuilt gear box. All suspension bushes, shocks etc all replaced. It's done less than 10000 km since rebuild as he got dementia and lost his license.

As it's a family truck I know the money was spent and work done, but as has been stated do not know how good a job was carried out on pump. I know everything was reset to factory specs and there is yellow paint all over pump (why?).

Pump had been looked at
Paint on bolts so ya can tell if someone been touching it
Doesn’t mean that the pump was done properly
As above some outfits don’t do housings
