Landcruiser 4.2 turbo diesel power loss

My '96 LandCruiser turbo diesel seems to lose power temporarily when I accelerate from stationary or when under way. It appears at about 2400rpm. It's like I accelerate then suddenly lose power, cough a little then gradually it picks up again.

Is this a fuel, air, transmission problem or what? Any advice appreciated!

I don't understand how that can affect anything? I have never even used my glow plugs even when parked overnight in heavy frosts.

Its mechanical direct injection(mine) so I flick the key for less than half a second and it starts instantly.

Is your mechanical or efi Sib? Is this a new thing or like it since you got it? it sounds to me like a boost compensator problem or something fuel/air related.
the reason I aske if it happens at 100kph is if auto it will have the torque converter locked up and pretty much eliminate the auto at fault.

check/change the simple stuff first air and fuel filters.

It's got 300k on the clock. Not smoky that I'm aware of. Not an oil burner.

Well if it is not black smoking it is not starving for air (and that wouldn't be intermittent) so it really points to a pump issue of some sort, could be a hole in boost compensator diaphragm or other things but that is where I would start.

I'll check my air and fuel filters this weekend. I do get it serviced regularly and this issue has become obvious only over the past few weeks. I've owned it for the last 250k kms.

OK. Truthfully that sounds to be a tad more technical to fix than my level of bush-mechanics lol. But clearly I need it sorted. Thanks for the prompt responses guys!!!
