Thread: Landcruiser vx

Looking at a 1991 landcrusier td. It has 350000kms on it. I see alot of them on trade me have high kms 290-400.
Are those kms are concern?

Either thay or ill look at a cheaper terrano
Safari or surf. But kms on them are all around 200-300 aswell..

My old 1kz surk had 320000 on it and went fine

Wagons of that age are getting real long in the tooth, they start costing more to keep on the road than one expects. Decide if you really need solid axels. If not then there are plenty more ifs/sold rear better options out there for towing.

K's probably aren't genuine either.

Just my opinion.

Mine a 95 with 350km and not a problem, transmission a bit jumpy but needs new fluid. Farmer and his 2 sons have 5 landcruiser between them, ranging from 300-600km all still going fine but a couple off the road cause theres no need to pay rego and warrant hen on private roads

Kms aren't genuine in one of the farmers! Mine hand cost anything in maintained in 18months except the usual oil and coolant. Mud tyres, winch, suspension lift and new shocks don't really count

Yea thats what i was thinking. It has a lift kit. Muds. Winch etc for $10500. Not the tidiest.

Other option is a terrano or surf etc for around $5000 and stick some tyres on.
I dont do heaps of offroad. But do enjoy it and need to tow my boat

The 12valve 1HDT is legendary for eating big ends.

And every part you replace will be 2-4 times the price of the same vintage Hilux part.

Great to drive and great off road especially with the front and rear difflocks.

Hmmmm maybe ill stick to a cheaper one.

Any thoughts on any?.
Had my 1hz surf. Was awesome besides getting abit hot towing uphills.

And having driven a few of those landies lately, you don't want one without a turbo, like mine!

Terrano's go pretty well, rust builds up under the rem seat ontop of fuel tank. And some of the gearboxes 5Th craps out. Loved my little izusu mu but wouldn't fit more than 2guys and gear plus a dog if you squeezed in. Used bugger all diesel.

What ever you get make sure it's not all time 4wd extra diesel for it to drink and cv's wearing out.

I sold a Surf with a genuine 167km for 6k in 2013,and service records every 5k.
BNH126 is the number if anyone comes across it.

Top two on my list if looking againg would be a Nissan Safari or another Isuzu Bighorn. Tried a few cruisers but wasn't impressed. I like 'old school' for off road.

Those issues only apply to the earlier model Terrano as far as I know, not the 95-onwards R50 model. I bought a 96 3.2 Terrano for $5k a few months back, 240k on it and a few minor jobs to keep it shipshape (discovered after buying that the previous owner neglected servicing a bit) but other than that it seems good. Decent grunt, good compromise between on-road and off-road driving. Had thought about a Safari or Cruiser but figured most of my driving is on the road anyway.

Avoid the 3.0td Terranos though, that ZD30 motor is a bit of a grenade.

Vx landcruiser = money pitt

My uncle has a vx cruiser with 535k on the clock and tows his 3.5 ton boat piece of piss

Any VX with over 200 000 km on the clock will likely need big ends replacing if they haven't been done already. Easy to do with the motor fitted still. A cheap insurance policy if you buy one.
Any 4wd running a smaller 4 cylinder diesel with a turbo will struggle more if you are doing a lot of towing, they all run hotter due to being put under more strain from being loaded up. A nice big 6 cylinder diesel will tow all day, albeit a bit slower than a turboed engine.
Nissan 3,2 diesel or Toyota 1KZ are relatively good motors if you are shopping around the 5K area, if looked after and driven accordingly. Fitting a pyrometer and learning how to drive to keep the EGTs down can help ensure the longevity of the engines. If auto definitely fit an auto trans oil cooler, especially with the Toyota 1KZ.
There are always plenty of things you can upgrade/modify like exhausts etc. to help tem run caller and possibly get a bit more power from them, but the biggest thing with small highly strung diesels is plenty of air and keep them cool.
I still drive an old 2.4 diesel Toyota Prado, it is slow, but I drive it accordingly and it does all I want it to do, just as long as I don't mind taking a bit longer getting there.

I absolutely loved my cruiser and the only things that broke were operator error (don't jump them with all diff locks engaged).

Plenty of grunt but most importantly heaps of room and super comfy for long trips.
