Problem is most of the standard LR motors until relatively recently (and that includes the V8s) would have trouble pulling a hen off her roost, so that motor conversion makes a lot of sense.
Those FDs are pretty good, my mate had the 4.2l one in a Rangerover, it had more power and torque than the 3.5v8. There were about 20 Rangerovers sold from a dealer in chch in the late 80s with 4.5l v8s, they go pretty well.
