Thread: Lapsed Rego on motorbike

Has anyone gone through the process of re-registering a vehicle that has had it's registration lapse?

I have a motorbike that the registration was left for a couple of years without rego and would like to get it on the road again.
Do I just need to take it to VTNZ a station and get them to check it over and what not?
Interested to know if anyone has been through this process recently and can tell me some info/tell me the costs involved.

Got the original plate and papers? Talk to a vehicle certifier, if you haven't informed them just not re registered it you could need a deep pocket for back rego, you should have de registered it and returned the plate

you will need to get a brake declaration , form a bike mechanic , and then go to vtnz with it , did it a couplr years ago , cost was around the $400 mark .... just call vtnz for info ...
cheers , it was all fairly painless ....remember to take it to vtnz on a trailer and not ride it there ..

Cheers, with a bit of research looks like there are a few private places that can do the compliance, might be a little more reasonable to go through these guys than VT NZ. Sounds like VT NZ can be less than helpful if you catch them on the wrong day.

i put a dirt bike on the road , and once the brake declaration was done and signed off by the bike shop , the vtnz in levin was outstanding in their service , ... not one problem .

I'll do some calling around tomorrow. Hopefully the VTNZ in Hamilton is just as helpful.

the actual process is not too hard ... keep everything stock , and wof standards ... good tires , etc , ie plain and boring ... get it through the system and legit ... then you can add tiny indicators and muck around .... if the fancy takes you ...

@Beetroot. What is the bike? @stumpy. You must have some good guys at your local VTNZ. The ones here are a bunch of arses. Common sense is not something they take to work.
They failed a warrant on a ute I used to own because the light for the number plate was 50mm futher away than it should have been and failed my sons corolla because a rear seat belt was a bit "fluffy" in one spot and "could have broken". Bloody thing would have cut you in half before it broke!

I've had nothing but excellent service from VTNZ, more than helpful, and very reasonable. I suggest you start by calling in and talking to them. Then you will know if you are up against it, or they are gonna be good to you. Then take it from there, anything is possible with the right amount of capital injection!

the bike was a 1998 xr250r , ...had to get the police to check the frame number to see if it was stolen as well as part of the reg check .... 2 months after getting it reged and wofed i was hit of it , losing my right leg and suffering many broken bones .....cest la vie

as you can see i motarded it the moment i got home from vtnz .....

Bike is an RF900, no plate.
Ill call VTNZ and a private place I know, see which sounds the best/easiest to deal with.

hey i have factory suzuki manual for a rf900 ......maybe we could do a dealsie!!!!

Buy a wrecked RF900 with live plates.

Seems to work for 2/3rds of the buggers I ride with.
