Thread: Mercury optimax

Hey guys found a boat I like with an 90 hp optimax on it.
Are they any good? Will it last 2-3 years till I get a big 4 stroke?
It's in my price range and a tidy boat all around.

It has nearly 400hrs on it.
I don't know much about outboards either.
If I get a couple years out of it I will be happy.

Im not up to date on the optimaxs, but the grandfather has a merc mariner 140, has about 700 hours on it now, the only thing that has gone wrong with it, was some one must have cut out a birds nest off a rod and dumped it, prop picked it up and wore out the lower oil seal= gearbox distructed.

I know every one loves the new four stroke and all, but if I could afford a boat Id still go for a decent 2 smoker or if the boat size warranted it duals

400 hours is nothing as long as the maintenance has been done properly. Merc are good motors (even though I wouldn't personally have one, I'm a Yamaha man).

It would last you more than a couple of years. My motor has just ticked over 800 hours and I won't be replacing it anytime soon

I know that anything over ninety hp sucks the juice big time. Two stroke have fast up and go, more than a four stroke, which is good when you need it get going fast.

I think the optimax drops a cyl or two when at low revs to save a bit of juice. Mate has a 90hp on his 585 fryingpan and loves it

I think your right there, The grandfathers one does

the big difference apart from fuel burn at idle/trolling revs is when you need to recon it fours are apparently a little more expensive.

The guy who services mine said if four stroke needs recon then throw it away and buy a newie. I think that means more expensive

Are you going to use it a shit load of hours? Yes? buy a 4 stroke!!! No? just use the Optimax

The Optis are good engines.
Run the right 2 stroke oil and make sure your starting battery is GRUNTY - don't run your other electronics/stereo from it.
