It's funny, my experience of the D-Max was in industrial service vehicles - buy it as a cab chassis and fit a service deck on it, then drive it to the suspension outfit to correct the sagging arse then load the tools on it, and drive it back to the suspension place to correct the sagging arse on it. Then wonder why the chassis has cracked through the spring and shock mounts. I haven't heard anything flattering about the new ones yet either, but the boys aren't enjoying many of the new vehicles to be fair. The older BT50 (twin of the Ranger) was the one I was refering to about reliability, I haven't had anything to do with the twin of the D-Max although I see the local ford/mazda agent has built a new showroom for Mazda and rehashed the old one for Ford so they are obviously not playing happy families any more. The only guy I know that's gone from the 3.2L to the 3.0L regrets it, finds it gutless and thirsty.

I can't find anything more economical than the Ranger I have now, all use around town and towing at rolling average of 8.7L/100K's - everything else I've had has been over 11.5 and in some cases significantly over. Apart from electrical and electronic gremlins, and the usual crap floppy factory suspension I haven't been able to really fault mine (ignoring dealer servicing balls ups).

Have had four Landcruisers in the last 13 years, all trouble free motoring apart from routine maintenance like tyres, brakes, bushes, belts etc. Yes, they’re thirstier than a modern ute, but everyone that travels with me comments how comfortable they are on and off road. And I spend a lot of time driving long distances so that’s a major factor for me. 2-3 litres per 100km mean nothing, and I’ll get that money back at trading time. All apart from my current one has been driven by me beyond 350,000kms and sold easily. My current one is nearly at 300,000km. I could sell it for pretty much the same money I paid for it. The first 100 series I sold to a mate has over 700,000kms on now and hasn’t given trouble. I would buy a 10 year old 2nd hand Landcruiser with 150,000km on it before I bought a new ute, pretty much all new vehicles are cheap junk in my opinion. Have weighed up the options many many times. Depending on your budget, I would look for a tidy lowish km 100 series, there’s a few 1998-2001 ones coming in from Japan that are mint. My boss just bought one that has less than 100K on it and is like it came off the show room floor.

Hard to beat a new model and 5 years warranty and don't think u can actually get any Toyotas for 6+ months.

Go the mighty 80 Series!! I don't like the barn doors though.

You never get the perfect setup of rear doors on a vehicle, I think it's one of those impossible things in the world! Barn doors end up being a pain loading or in wind, the tailgate style can get in the way at times and can be shockingly heavy in some designs also is prone to leaks. I have seen one Toyota version where a canopy lift door replaced the entire rear tailgate of the ute like a station wagon, but it was such a long door you couldn't use it if you parked close to something behind you.

Toyota Landcruiser all the way, they are bulletproof.
Had the front brakes and new discs done yesterday at 110km, other than that it's just standard servicing and tires, heaps of power, so much so the demerit points have caught up with me.
It's like driving a very comfy Lazyboy with all the bells and whistle.

Yeah Land Cruiser for the win.
But they are fat wee things.
My Prado was way slimmer and fitted around some tight wee bits going to Macetown.
Cobbers LC did the trip too, but a Land Rover coming out had a real job squeezing through the last wee bit of track that my cobber could spare him.
Otherwise the LC wins all day, all ways.

If I have a property myself, I will have two cars, the other will a Jeep wrangler Tj or similar only use it for fishing and hunting purpose.

In the last 20 years I've bought through my business probably 40+ Fords. Mostly Rangers PX1-4 and I've had near zero problems. The worst issue was a fucked clutch but probably driver related. Currently I have a PX4 Sport and it's the best vehicle I've owned. It's only got 4.5K on the clock so hardly a great test of durability. I've not owned many other brands but from my track record I'm not going anywhere in a hurry. The Everest as others have alluded is just an SUV version of the Ranger. I'm certain the Toyota is a decent vehicle to, I have no experience with it though. Id doubt you'd go wrong with either.

My neighbour bought a used one back in 2012, he was pretty keen on washing it on weekends I guess so everyone could check it out because during the week it was parked in the garage or parked at work.
He was less keen on us seeing it on a tow truck on its way to have its motor yanked out to get its frost plugs replaced . It was ages till he got that turd back from the workshop and I bet he took a hit when he offloaded it onto some other sucker.

Edit, the first question is "how come so cheap?" . The purchase price is more like a downpayment.

40+ Fords....;) I see you mate, good biz outcome belong to good biz man. If I have the faces, I will set a operation in Hawkes Bay, so much potential either from sea or land. Thank you for the advise, what I need is simple, a vehicle can carry me and my wife on fishing and hunting mission with loads, and once I need to relocate, there is enough space for my essential stuffs ( have thrown away a lots good ones when I moved from akl to chch), and presentable to "those" who do`t know me well. I like my 2.0 x trail, just I am not confident to ride it to cross river or a ford with soft floor, thus missed lots of chance to explore the wild in south.

Benefit of buying like that is flicking them under warranty and taking the 3-yr devaluation as the cost of running the vehicle. My one I ended up keeping the thing, as it ended up with a full suspension upgrade and a couple of other mods and changing out wouldn't have been cost effective.

How much for a 2002 -2018 Land cruiser vx maintenance cost every year, a leather seats one? One friend told me that cost of him $2,800 for regular service after 60,000 kms? Really that much for a diesel engine?

My 2018 VX has just had the front discs, pads done, fuel filter replaced and Wof for approx $800.00
Previous service was no more than $500.00
110k on the clock. From new it had a 8000km service interval, I stretched most of them to 15k.
Tyres approx $300.00 each, get around 40 - 50k out of them.
138 ltr fuel tank
Insurance a couple of grand.
New ones come out in a V6

We just had a 60k service on our 2018 vx was $371.43, biggest cost is the massive amount of oil the v8 takes.

I keep in good nic and it will hold value, last of the V8 models, mind you Toyota would have rigorously tested the V6 before chucking it into there new Landcruiser model.

Working on my truck sunday with mechanic mate who runs the big diesel shop in Chch. Talked more about the out-of-warranty Rangers, and he said again they're doing too many - gearboxes and motor trouble - and at low ks. You may get plenty of good ones but unfortunately too many turning up bad. Doing mostly 3.2s but mostly because the smaller motors may still be in warranty.

Asked him about the Landruiser VX100 and he likes them. 2.5 tonnes so a big heavy unit but he said the 4.2 24 valve diesel (as in later series 80s) is a good motor. VX100 not quite as good offroad as 80 series - I think he mentioned beam axle rear and independent suspension front - but still a a good sound, comfortable and capable unit. Fuel reasonable with the diesels - I think we saw 24-25mpg at best on a trip in his 80 series. Said mechanically take the VX100 over a Ranger any day.

80 and 100 series are getting pretty old now. Lots of rust in older 80s over here and always a bit of refurb needed on the consumables, moving parts, shocks, ball joints, universals ….

On a older 4Wd vehicle doing 20-25, 000 kms you will have two services. One of which will cost you 2-3 k because of the additional maintenance whether tyres, suspension or other repairs eg engine, radiator turbo etc. At least that’s been my Toyota exp for the last 15 years.

The 200 series cruisers are pretty thirsty, I reckon they'd use at least 50% more fuel than a ute/everest.

200 series and an Everest can't really be compared, quite different machines.

You do see a few of those LC200 with worn or blown motors, or had engine replacements, around the350-400k mark, I think some of the earlier models had engine issues.

Round town (Auckland) my wagon does 13.7 litres per 100km

The 80 and 100 series are time tested and pretty bulletproof. If I was looking for a "rest of my life" 4x4 and I came across a rust free specimen for the right price I reckon you couldn't go past a zero rebuild and you would be done and dusted for the next 15-20 years depending on your annual ks and terrain tackled.

Then again, I have a shed full of Patrols, so am already set up for the rest of my life:thumbsup:.

I religiously service my 200 series before every 10,000kms, or approx every 2nd month for me. I replace fuel filter every service. Most recent service - oil/oil filter, grease unis, diesel filter and consumables and mechanics time cost me $314+GST. I replace air filter and Toyota fuel injector cleaner every 2nd service.

I do other things myself, such as diffs and transfer case, brake fluid every 50,000km, and new coolant and flush trans every 100,000km. That costs me about $200 in fluids and a couple hours of my time. Tyres every year just before winter, at a cost of about $2k.

Always use genuine Toyota parts…

Mine averages about 14 litres per 100km, that’s running 34 inch mud tyres, bar work, etc and extra weight. Once I start towing thru winter, a large tandem trailer, 1-2 tonnes, for 5-6 months daily, that goes up to about 16-17 litres per hundred. And that includes a few hundred off road/low box kms per month as well. I don’t think it’s that thirsty for the work it does.

If you really want to go off road you need a 4wd motorbike, drive to the end of the road even in a 2wd ute/trailer drop the bike off and away you go.
A ute may say 4wd, but they all get stuck pretty easy unless you have dedicated off road tires, a winch and half a clue how to drive it, and the roads ahead. A 4wd motorbike and you can be a complete muppet and you should be good apart from tipping it over.

Right, big tyres off road, heave load will cause more fuels, I do `t actually care about fuel cost, just like to understand ongoing service/maintenance cost since that is inevitable and do `t have experience of owning a diesel 4x4. But now I know, thank you all. And, I will not tow a large load, only maybe will carry 3-4 passengers with hunting and fishing gears when FTEs really come back. Btw, 1-2 tonnes trailer? Horses?

I thought about that before, like to have a Honda 4x4 with independent suspensions. But, I dropped this idea for now for my reasons. If really, I can have a place in SI and get settled little bit, I will have a Jeep Wrangler Tj only for fishing & hunting purpose. Hope I can have this little dream come true next year.

If you are shifting to the South Island esp. Canterbury there are not that many hunting areas on public land that have 4x4 access. Following on from the 4x4 motorbike idea which I like, some of the off road capable E bikes might be worth a look. Many areas have 'bike access' but not 4x4 across private land to public hunting areas and an E Bike qualifies for this.
I would buy a 3litre Hi Ace van and an E bike. My guess is that you would end up shooting game pretty close to where you stop the bike because they are quiet. You can drive to the access point, sleep in the van and be on the bike before first light away hunting or fishing.

Buy a 4.2TDI Patrol,just keeps going after 572000ks,had it 18yrs now.Just purrs along,tryed to give it a cutnpolish few weeks ago.Looks ok from 10mtrs away.Havnt touched the motor yet and doesnt burn oil.

Technically, I am in Canterbury, Christchurch will be exact, just can `t go back for now, was planned in late Oct but Mr. Micheal Wood forgot his promise. So, now I am working on other paths. The idea of e-bike is good, I like ktm, same travel distance as ktm250, maybe less 70km. Now, I can only have one sizable SUV, both me and business or jobs.
