Ford Rangers face the same problem Fisher and Pykel washing machines do when it comes to breakdowns. Statistically they may be just as reliable as the rest of the market, but there are so many more of them out there than any other model that the number of failures, and therefore dissatisfied customers is much higher.

That well balanced statement said, I wouldn't own one!

    My 2c worth...

I have a 2011 Pajero 3.2 DiD, has been superb, tows my Alloy 6.5HT no worries, gets me about the place and relatively cheapish to run...
80lt tank will get average 800Kms, hasn't given me any troubles what so ever, am and nearly 90k on the clock
Have done a few things like 40mm lift, snorkel, K&N. I'm not a hardcore off roader but do need to cross rivers and drive on rough tracks, tyres will be getting swapped out for Coopers...
My son inlaw to be likes it so much he went a bought a 2010 model, loves it
Being the exceed model has all the fruit, leather, heated seats and so on, and it gets dirty as we have had couches, other furniture, wine barrels, dead animals and alsorts in the back, and has the bonus of an extra couple of seats that fold out of the nway.

    Worth looking at...

So If i know two owners with gearbox problems one has been fixed twice I think your graph may be wrong with only two complaints for 2016!!!

@Dorkus the Pajero is also a proper 4WD with a selection lever for 2/4 H/L, go have a look/drive of one, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Can't say I've heard of any major issues with them either.

    Gotta love Ford https://www.consumeraffairs.com/auto...rd_ranger.html

Looks like I dogded a bullet - Ford Ranger was on my shortlist when I updated a couple of years ago. Went with another brand but one of the reasons was the local Ford dealership didn't exactly excite me, and not so much based on the vehicle itself.

5 over the years. Will never have another as long as my arse points to the ground. Last 2 were a sedan and an L200 twin cab Sport. Both purchased new.

The sedan developed a cracked head at 40k- new head required. Never overheated/run without water. Garage suggested casting flaw.
Spewed oil out of the main shaft seal at the alternator end (oil everywhere inside engine bay). Did this 3 times despite seal being replaced under warranty.
Fuel pump seal failed - had just packed up ready for holidays and noticed quantity of oil on garage floor. Had to find a spare during holiday period and replace b4 going away. Kids were very patient.

In between times the rev counter used to go berserk.

L200 broke exhaust manifold stud on #4. By the time I detected it there was a large black mark on the firewall. Stud extraction and new gasket.
Consumed bushes in front end despite being mostly a sealed road use vehicle. Garage said "oh, Mitsis". They recommended and fitted a non Mitsi replacement and I had no further problems.

I'm cured of the brand now however would say that they now offer one of the longest warranties around so maybe the reliability issues I experienced have now been got on top of or I just had Monday vehicles.

I might also add that I have had 2 older model Hi Luxes and now use a Lite Ace as a hack. Very happy with them all. The last Hi Lux had done some incredible milage but was rusting out due to spending a few years not garaged.

Iv had mitis double cab 4x4s since the early 80s. Hundreds of thousands of trouble free ks. One and only problem was syncro went in 1st in a v6 petrol model. 18 months out of warrenty and I only paid $80.00 for some parts IIRC. Iv had excellent service from the local dealer.
Downer leases and had Hilux, heaps of gearbox and clutch issues with the early sheepshagger models, then Rangers and are now switching to triton.

I get about 8.5L per 100km open road. 11L around town and 14L towing. Gets exponentially worse if I drive like a dick.
