    New Ute/4wd

Looking at getting a ute to do some perkies in and have as a hunting wagon. My budget is about $8k, I have been looking at late 80's early 90's Hiluxes.

I dont know alot about vehicles, looking for something that will hold its value and be reliable. Used only on weekends so not a daily driver. I know its a can of worms but Im looking to make an informed decision as the money didnt come easy.

Does it need to be a Ute? A surf or terrano would give you more bang for your buck probably.

It would be better dog hair wise to have a ute but yeah would look at them.

Are the hiluxes/surfs fairly alright? I know our fords at work lose transmissions all the time.

I've got no experience with surfs. I've had a 2.4 and a 2.8 diesel hilux Ute and now have a 3.2 terrano. I live the terrano way more. Heaps more power and a way more comfortable ride. Maybe not as capable off road but I don't do any serious off roading.

Just a few ideas below of what I might consider in a similar situation.

When would you need something by? I know of a 3.0td 2005 hilux sr5 - last of the old shape, 550,000km, double cab, commercial roof racks, canopy, near new cooper tyres, meticulously maintained - runs and drives mint. Higher kms due to daily trip of 300km return. Probably around that money and available in 6 weeks or so.

I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.

As far as holding its value it would have to go to Toyota I'd go a mitsi over a Nissan 3.2 might be OK tho always found the 2.7s a gutless piece of shit

Had a 2.8 Hilux. Slow as fuck but relatively cheap to fix and piece of piss to do self maintenance. 8k is about the starting price for an alright 2.8. Most of them out there now have had a hard life and people want the world for them. People love to steal them too. Something to keep in mind.

Nissan Mistral Turbo Diesel Intercooled 1998 | Trade Me these have ladder chassis unlike later terrano's has intercooler and flasher diesel pump so slightly more poke than early 2.7 terrano sure it's an auto but manual terranos 96 on are rare and the clutches on post 95 are expensive.

I got a bit of buckfever on trademe and won an auction for a 3 door '95 Safari turbo diesel. Paintwork looks immaculate, seller said interior is good. The seller messaged me saying I got a good deal on it but all I know is it looks good and was within budget and my mechanic brother is happy, not a car guy myself. The only catch is got to fly up to Auckland to get it.
