    New wagon... what to buy?

    Hi All,

In need of a cheap nasty 4wd, looking to spend about $3k ...

There are some out there on trademe in various states but seems price wise im looking at the mighty Nissan terrano .... (or a pajero with near like millions of KM's on it)

Anyone have or previously owned one? the 2.7 ones seem ok but what about the V6 petrol ones?

Wish i could stretch the budget to something toyota but for $3k i think im dreaming

    Cheers

    Marty

Stay away from the older pajeros deisels they ar time bombs. Terannos go for ever but are a bit gutless but its probly what id be looking at for the coin. Yiu may be lucky and pick up an 80series swb landy with the 3b diesel but most people want far too much for them

yeah i have driven afew of the 2.7 terrano's and they are gutless but its only for getting me from A to B and not throwing a beast in the back of the family wagon.

Found a v6 petrol one for like 2250 locally - pretty rough but like i say i dont need flash i just need it to go and somewhat reliable ...

I had a daihatsu rocky as my first offroader, they are a handy cheap little vehicle that are more like a quad than a truck in the rough stuff...
Something small may be the way to go, escudo etc, they just dont like deep water and sometimes float when you want them to sink...

I just found another terrano up in Auckland, $2950 ... trusty 2.7 turbo. Dont like buying cars without looking at them first though

Pickings might be a bit slim for that kind money. I dunno if you could get an older V6 hilux surf for that?

I saw one for $3999 not far from the farm. The V6's are a bit hungry though from what I've heard. I don't know if people mean hungry for a V6... or just hungry because it's a V6. Even if it does cost you a bit to run they'd be a bulletproof truck.

Might be able to get a little Escudo those are little beasts. We used to have a couple.

Yeah i had a chat with my mechanic mate and he pretty much said keep away from the petrol Terrano's.

Just having a look and might have to stretch the budget to 3500. There are some reasonable 2.7 Terranos for that sort of money or even a bighorn ... again dont know much about the bighorn's

Izuzus are a good engine but the trans are normally flogged out on anything over 100k.

Ah good to know, overall i doubt its going to do many km's so its not a stress about power steering belts, just keep a spare in the truck.

Happy that its manual ... hopefully the mechanic comes back with good news and i can get it next week ...

Have had good experiences with the 2 bighorns we have had in the family around that era. One has done ~320 000k and you would think it had done a lot less than my surf (240000) Motor sounds perfect, body/chassis still tight etc
