not another "what calibre" thread

Yeah na luckily no :) this is a "what calibre of 2.5 ton tipping truck" thread
I have a little 1.7 ton digger and am starting to venture into landscaping work with it, and am not so keen at shovelling each cube off the trailer any more. So my question is does anyone have any experience with little 2.5T tipping trucks ? I am looking at second hand and from what I can see the "going rate" seems to be around the 35K 2nd hand.
What things to look out for, and what to avoid.
Any and all advise greatly received :)

Tipping trailer would be cheaper.

Yeah I have been mulling that over David, but I have just done a 3 day job helping a builder mate of mine and my poor old van is really feeling towing around all the weight, so if I will need a new tow vehicle soonish, I thought a little truck might solve both problems for a while. Then I plan to buy a specialist trailer so I can carry the digger, buckets and auger + bits on it to save chucking around the 50kg drive unit and 30 and 57kg bits for it.
I'm getting a bit old for chucking those kinds of weights around all the time these days

I hire a little Izuzu 2.5 tipper from time to time, easily the best one I've ever had anything to do with. I'll find out what its details are. Cheers

Thanks TentMan :) actually my builder mate hired one of them from hirepool for this job we just did, and I was way impressed. It had duels on the back and looked like you could drop the sides of the tray.
A 4 wheel drive one would be my dream

Grandson bought this for flogging around the block...back in its day would have been ideal.

Its a 2011 Izuzu ELF manual, duals on the back and a LSD. Well balanced and we were driving on wet Southland paddocks in late May (flat ones it has to be said), it slipped and slid all round the place but kept going, I was frankly astounded!

Yikes, sounds like it a bit of excitement.

Shizen :wtfsmilie: that might make me want to fit a switch to the bolt so I couldn't engage the tipper while the bolt was in. As I discovered with this job I have just done is ya tooing and froing all over the show so little things can slip through the cracks.
The same as when I put the disk lock on the motorbike, and am supposed to put a little plug in the ignition keyhole to remind me if I take off I will do a "stoppy"

Most of the newer tippers have a hydraulic sequencing valve that first undoes the locks before it lets oil go to the hoist.
2019/2020 Keith Andrews where doing very good prices on little Canter tippers. Now they are doing cab chassis for about the same price $40k +gst

lol yeah it took me a bit of figuring out that the release engages when you activate the tip. I thought you had to pull a pin at the tailgate so pulled the pin and the gate swung open :wtfsmilie: Went like a dream after I realised you don't even need to get out of the cab :)
I've been ogling some in the Clevedon truck sales adds in the "deals on wheels/ Farm trader" magazine. 42K + gst which pushes it up a bit higher than I was planning on spending, but low kms (36,000km).

Yeah that's a good idea Berg. No point spending up on something I might only use occasionally at the moment anyway. I was planning on paying cash but when the old gst gets whacked on top it pushing into the ouch zone.
I thought I might ask at the hire places where they source their ones from, and/or where they sell the used ones ( although hire ones would most likely be flogged out I would think ? ).

Yeah Mimms, I have been thinking about a tow vehicle and tipper trailer. I want to be able to move a couple of cube at a time. The problem with scraping the dirt off the trailer with the digger, is my dump site is a few kms from the job and more than 1 trailer load. So moving the digger to the dump site to scrape the trailer is not really feasible.
I also have an auger and bits which I would like to be able to carry on the trailer with the digger.
Yeah I was thinking ex rentals would have been caned, but might be a bit cheaper.

I'm not in any hurry and haven't made any decisions yet :)

How much fufu is it setting up a business ?

Yeah that's what I worried about with getting an ex rental. I've seen the way a lot of people treat hire gear, ridden hard and put away wet.

Great info, yeah I wasn't sure about the running costs on a light truck. I like to buy something with as low kms as possible, and treat it well so it lasts. Seems to be about 8-9K for a tipping trailer, then maybe 20K or so for a towing wagon. Still cheaper than a truck, and if running costs are a shitbag should be cheaper to run as well than a truck with the cof etc...
My van is only rated to 1.5ton braked, and I've put 300K on it since I've had it, so I can feel it having a bit of a whinge with the heavy trailer these days.

2nd the one re COF. up here it a pain, long waits and they are never happy unless they fail you on something. Parts are often hard to find etc. Had a guy last month have a guy do a u turn in front of him, small bump on one corner of the cab and they have written it off as no parts available, ripples in the floor etc.
A truck will probably run you twice the running cost of a ute, but if you are running loaded all the time them that's a different story. A truck will cope better with that. In my game the guys with Vans or utes typically have to add override springs or air bags and get certified as they are loaded at around max all the time. For urban work they are great and much cheaper. However don't expect them to deal with forestry roads on a daily basis.

With Utes, watch out for dodgy km claims in the private market, too many are rigging the odo-reading. Sometimes buying off a business with big fleets, well-serviced is the-go. Some upgrade their vehicles regularly, to keep their investments up-to-date, while other sell when theyre flogged-out

Yeah I would like to stay in class 1.
I'm not worried about being able to carry material as well as the digger since it always seems to work out more than 1 load of spill so would be going back and forth a couple of times.
Running costs may be an issue since I'm only planning on doing this part time initially, since I still have my "day job" 3 days a week.

These guys do a 3.5T tipping trailer which looks like it might be long enough I can put a auger drive unit and bit attachment on the front.
