    Outboard bottom gearbox

Now because I’m old and forgotten more than you know, I casually flicked my new 4 blade prop and low and behold these deaf old ears picked up a noise like the bevel gears meshing, nothing nasty, I’ve done this many times but cannot remember if there’s a noise or silence? I think it’s normal, but before I rip it a part, I just thought you young guys will know?? No it was in neutral! If you don’t know, go flick your prop for me, thanks.
The boat went perfect with the hydraulic steering, no feed back and rock steady, 4 blade prop makes a difference. Got to learn my new fish finder next..

Give it a run (Prop turning) then immediately drain 100ml into a clean dry plastic bottle.

Tape a magnet to the plastic lid and turn upside down and leave for 12 hours.

Leave the magnet in place on the lid and remove the lid to inspect what may be stuck there.

You will usually find a tittle metal, however heaps of fine stuff or big lumpy bits and you will likely have a problem.

When draining, note what water there may be present (Seals gone)

If nothing drains out because a) no oil in the box or b) the drain is blocked with lumpy bits.... then you could forgo the magnet test and jump straight to the worst conclusion.

Check adjustment of gear control/throttle control.
3 outboards here none of which make any discernible gear noise when the prop is spun by hand in neutral.

I suspect the adjustment is just verging on going into either ahead or astern, wriggle the control into astern and back into neutral and test, then control into ahead and back into neutral and test.

If meshing sounds still persist after one or the other it tells you which adjustment to adjust .

Yep I’ve drained the oil, little bit of debris on the top magnet. But now the prop spins without noise, have just towed it back from Taupo, self adjusted? what you are saying is what I checked first, no water in the oil yahoo, but I’ll get it adjusted, quite hard to drag into reverse.

The fact it now spins without noise pretty much confirms some kind of adjustment or control position issue.

Was the control centered in neutral when you first noticed it?.....people helping unload, clean the boat can knock or move things you arnt aware of at the time.

Yep I started the motor, I think yr right, it can be temperamental when starting, you need to move the arm for it to start sometimes!!
