    Outboard motor trim

    Took my boat out for a shake down today , it seems the power tilt that was working fine , stopped going up . Will go down but won't come up . The hydraulic thingie doesn't even register when I push up switch , however I can hear a click somewhere else (sealed box with several wires in and out ) .Any ideas whats gone wrong . its an early 90s merc 60 hp

    Check you have power at the tilt and trim motor, this will tell which way to go, motors are pretty simple, could be brushes or worn bushes, motor has tie rods down into the pump housing. Don't damage the magnets in the motor

    definitely as Maca says, funny but the motor works harder lowering than lifting. check oil for air and also check screw on the side of the trim lift for tightness.

    Ok some help please , so Ive got power to my pump motor , so it must be the motor , it was very dirty inside . I've cleaned it and put it back together but still not work . How clean does it need to be ? . Any other tips or tricks to get this working ?

    Are the brushes making contact with the spindle?

    It looks like they where they supposed to be , got spring loaded wire arms that I set once in place . @Maca49 what do you think ?

    Is the relay further up the line shot? OK flicking one direction but not the other.

    Since you have the motor out, If you put (I assume 12V) on the leads with it all assembled does it spin??
    If it does I might be looking else where in the supply line

    And then swap leads and make sure it spins the other way.

    No power up and down to wires that connect to trim motor check ! Motor not spin when it's wires on bat terminal . I'm not that mechanical but can't really see what's up with it as it looks simple enough . Maybe not clean enough ?

    As mike says, com wires ok no damage? You can check the armature with a meter, are the magnet ok not broken cracked or loose, you have the arm correct way round in the stator? Are the bearing bushes ok some time the arm locks on magnets.

    There is a contact in there ( maybe an overload ) will find some fine paper to clean contact face . And clean again . Will check for damage Magnets . Will fine oil help on the shaft , bearing ?
