    Prados

After my little misadventure drowning my old prado crossing a flooded road the good buggers at AMI came through and accepted my claim, but its looking like a potential write off. if it is written off Im keen for another 120 prado.
I was wanting to know if anyone has experience with the 4l v6 ones compared to diesels?
Are the petrol ones outrageously more thirsty? Because they are a bit cheaper to buy.
Our current one is a diesel and knowing what I know now the modern diesels are more expensive to maintain plus the RUCs are a pain in the butt.
Just want to compare our options because it'll be our family troop carrier and maybe my hunting wagon if I need to sell my hilux

if carpets get wet they can get a bit cranky. Wiring electronics etc. ,makes a bit of a mockery of what they used to be designed to do

I know for for a fact its a new conrod because I spent a couple of hours and checked after the vehicle had a mouthful of water. Then decided to try ami because I figured the the excess is cheaper than the parts. Im hoping its not written off. Will find out in a few days or so after they assess the damage

    I had a 120 Prado V6 4.0 for 6 years as a company car, in Aus.

We travelled all over WA, NT, SA and Tassie in that truck, often driving across the Nullabor towing a camper. We went properly outback in it, some epic trips.

The average fuel consumption over ~200,000km was 16L/100km. Roof bars, beacon, UHF antennas, bull bar.

The other guys mostly had the 1KD diesels in theirs. I had access to all the fleet data, and because I’m a bit of a truck nerd I kept an eye on the diesel consumption because I was always curious to know the difference. The diesels ran between 11-12L/100km. They were driven pretty hard.

Now, I had a company fuel card, so consumption wasn’t an issue. But looking at the price of petrol vs diesel, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the petrol. It was the best truck I’ve ever had in my life. Utterly reliable, powerful, smooth, effortless. Loved it.

Shortly petrol will be on RUC so the cost difference and pain in the butt factor will get closer...

If they write it off you could look to buy it back off them and swap the engine out with a reman or a wrecker part? Depends if you can get it with the plates still live - i.e. flooded write off vs engine damage due to water ingestion. If AMI goes the first reason, it's stuffed and not worth trying to get it back on the live rego list. If the latter, they may be happy to sell it back to you with the rego still live, or reach a money deal to pay you out for the damage and retaining the vehicle.

A good mate of mine has a 120 series with the V6, it's very quiet and smooth to drive, heaps of power and the fuel use is proportional to driving style.
It's thirsty when towing for sure, but your not swinging into every servo you see.

This would make boat owners very happy (if they remove the excise tax off the raw product )

Stated aim of the current coalition? It's part of the transport agreement they reached as I understand it. One of the reasons for it is that now PHEV vehicles are now getting doubled tapped requiring RUC for the battery component of the vehicle but also getting stung for the petrol RUC component. Whereas things like non-P HEV's are now a LOT cheaper to run than the PHEV's!

So petrol isnt a deal breaker by the looks. We only tow long distances once or twice a year for camping trips and small towing trips into town and back but primarily carting the kids around and going away. Maybe I will have to sell the old hilux and get the wife a runabout for the day to day operations and short trips into town if i go down the petrol route
