If they write it off you could look to buy it back off them and swap the engine out with a reman or a wrecker part? Depends if you can get it with the plates still live - i.e. flooded write off vs engine damage due to water ingestion. If AMI goes the first reason, it's stuffed and not worth trying to get it back on the live rego list. If the latter, they may be happy to sell it back to you with the rego still live, or reach a money deal to pay you out for the damage and retaining the vehicle.
