    Quad advice

    Hey guys.
Need a little help deciding whether this is the go or not. Basically looking for a quad for spotlighting and accessing hunting blocks. Been offered this 2008 Honda trx420 for 3.5k. Mint condition 28,000km.
Crap photos but you get the gist. Should do the trick? Decent price? Also whats the depreciation like on quads, will it loose much value say within next two years.
    Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers Josh

That will do what you want just fine,
Price is fair and it won't deprecate much more.

On the same subject, whats the general dos and donts or what to look for when buying one.

Like brand: Honda, Suzuki, etc... any others to consider?
Engine CC: 400~500... is 300cc a bit small?
    I guess 4wd is a must.
and I like the sound of the auto's... must be a city driver or are the manuals better?...

    Quad novice.

Stay with a 350 to 420. Many farm accidents are simply because workers take them beyond centre of gravity and cannot control roll over.In 2000 had 3 huge Wairoa stags on a 350 Honda. Slow chug but it did it.Biggest thing is regular maintenance i.e. oil and filter changes and don't flog them like an F1.

Trick is to check out underneath and see if the chassis is rusted away from driving around farms in long grass, or if it's freshly resprayed be doubly cautious

When I brought mine I payed $500 more for one off a sheep farm , both same year but was easy to see the difference .
Personally I think the 300 - 450 make the best hunting bikes unless you are towing pig dogs along

What got me was the cost of running them compared to a diesel 4x4 vehicle. They're thurst little buggers.

i went for a can-am, 2006 400cc. i got the 2 seater cos its a bit wider and longer due to the 2nd seat, ya take the seat off and put the toolbox on for more storage. good thing is its auto, switch for 2wd/4wd on handle bars, real nimble, heaps of storage, and fun haha, i paid $4800 about 3 years ago

Make sure the diff oils have been changed recently, 420 diffs are prone to failure when they get up in kms.

Great wee bikes, ours gets punished and keeps chugging away. Although it's had a few electrical issues lately, caused by moisture.

    We paid $5000 for a 2008 one 3 years ago, with 33,000kms. It's now pushing 40,000kms. This is mainly a play/hunting bike

The best thing about the 420 is they have plenty of go when you need it, but are still light enough to throw around in the rough stuff and lift out by hand if you get caught up or stuck.
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
