A question of ethics around EV use

First of all let me say I'm not looking to start an argument, just something I think needs discussing Re the EV question. It is something we have been discussing at my work.

If you have friends/ family with an EV come to visit and they have travelled beyond the range of their EV should they have the expectation of charging it at your house and if they do are you then ethically allowed to ask for say $40 for fuel if you go and visit them? t doesn't come down to the cost but more the expectation.

On another not our site foreman's have work vehicles with fuel cards, they are allowed personal use but are supposed to put in their own fuel. Now supposing they are given an EV next time round they have both said they would not charge them at home unless an electrical subsidy is given by work. Do you think this is a precedent that needs discussing?

No, not yet

we pay tax at pump with fuel, so I'm guessing not. As to the recharging, I'd offer money if I needed to charge my car at friends house, just as I would If I needed to get gas. As you don't tend to go around visiting knowing you don't have enough gas to leave, or ask for a top because the tank ain't quite full, I'd tend to think of asking to plug into your house supply rather cheeky personally.
Plan your trip. There is no reason they can't charge prior or after getting to your place.

And what if they pop up or down for a multi-day visit with running around sightseeing during the day? Are they meant to bring a generator with them so they don't bludge? What happens if they don't have any parking at their house or the road edge is a bit away, meaning a charging lead isn't an option? It's a very valid question that you raise.

Not only should they not expect to be able to charge their EV, but when visiting people with conventional vehicles they should park around the corner to avoid giving offense! They should also never say 'Kia ora' or mix other Maori words with English in such company, refrain from political or religious conversation, and politely accept the BBQ food offered to them! (quietly exits stage right whistling Dixie).

With the current state of our transmission grid, generation and EV battery technology (not there yet) I believe that EV's are a very selfish option. They will begin paying RUC in April 2024 (was to be 2023).

For putting around town OK. For anything else they are a liability.

20-30K more expensive than the equivalent ICE.

A lot heavier than equivalent ICE

CO2 footprint only crosses over with equivalent ICE machine at 160,000 kms travelled

If anyone came and visited me in an EV and said they were low on juice (I'm off grid) I'd just let them know that if they turn right at the bottom of the drive there's a big long downhill in front of them to regeneratively charge their battery up on:ORLY:

There's plenty of evidence out there that people are purchasing PHEVS without actually understanding just how they work, adn that if they don't plug them in they are just driving around in an overly heavy ICE machine.

Yep, not until there’s a large enough catchment of EVs then the Government will hit them.

No but they indirectly pay carbon tax via the cheap Indonesian coal that the government burns at this time of year to power them ����

I've cut contact with people who have bought EV's.

The conservation organisation I used to work for ran an island off the West Coast of Scotland, had a very old hydro that only worked 50% of the time, backup was a red diesel generator.

Got asked why I was using the pickup when there was an electric buggy (Polaris Ranger), told them there was less energy wastage using the diesel pickup (fuel comes on boat, goes directly into motor) vs the electric buggy (fuel comes off boat, goes into storage tank, fill IBC from storage tank, move IBC to generator with tractor which also runs on diesel, pump diesel from IBC into generator, generator supplies power which then goes into charging the batteries of electric buggy).

Nah.

This a wee toy we recently bought. I tell delicate people that is is a hybrid as it has petrol motor and an electric motor (because it doesn't have a crank handle):D

Nice wee toy for the open roads down here.Does it have engine management control,switch from 8 to 4 cylinders?.Or just put foot to the floor and enjoy the hp.

It doesn't have the engine management system, just the 6.2 litre LS3 and a 6 speed manual. It averages 22 mpg (13 litres per 100 k's) and open road cruising in 6th gear is 105 kph @ 1500 rpm.

Best thing about that is the ram raider kids won't be able to flog it - not stomp and go (3rd pedal that you need to know what you're doing to make it go!).

Indirectly EV also stands for 'Either Vegan'..........cough, cough.....

Rapid charge station. And if there isn't one close enough to drive too, then you have a useless car.
Personally I'd get one of those emergency radios that you wind to charge, pop a couple wires out back with alligator clips, and next time someone wants to charge there car, hand it to them and say " be my guest"

Had dinner last night with some friends. He has just taken delivery of a limited edition RHD C8 Corvette, certainly looks the biz but far from cheap.. Reckons he'll put it up against my AMG when it's run in :thumbsup:
