    Rainbow Road, local knowledge.

Hiya good bastards, I’m at Marble Hill, heading to Rainbow Road in the Mog.
Any input from the hive mind appreciated,
Thinking Hanmer, Jollies Pass, turn left, Rainbow Road.
    Anything I’m missing?
Due to an unfortunate incident, which I’ll slap some photos up of once my insurance broker is satiated, there’s no Jimny on a-frame to worry about.
Rocktoy, still may be in the area for your trip, which sounds excellent, but losing the poor little Jimny is constraining me to more open country in the Mog. And licking my wounds a bit!
Very sad, 7,000kms, second engine, and written off on the Haast highway! Poor thing may have been cursed!

No , it’s as easy as that . Don’t forget to stop at Lake Tennyson on your way past and Island Hill hut . Gods country in there when the weathers good

Don't go Jollies its too narrow you want Jacks pass opposite the Pines camp ground off Jacks Pass road, I think you might have the two confused as most people do.

Went through Rainbow last week. Road in good nick as stated; actually better on Molesworth side of boundary. Rivers were low, but with recent rain I know the Branch, so probably side streams will be running well. Toll for our Ute was $60.

Yes. Jack's pass, stopping in at Tennyson and Island Gully. And the swing bridge at Hamilton rapids (Lee's Creek track). I am heading through south on Wednesday.

Take Jacks Pass. Mate went through last week. He said Jollies is a bit of a mess. I went through Molesworth and up as far as Island pass then back to Hanmer over Jacks yesterday, road is fine.

Scotties Hut, Cow stream for the hotpools, Maling Pass while you are near Lake Tennyson.

Did the hotpools on the way down to the Waiau in January. Found they mainly consisted of drowned sandfly soup and grey water But the whole of the St James area is amazing for recreation and access. The complete antithesis of most North Island public land.

Had a dip in XR500’s sandfly soup pools, excellent, 2nd pool was perfect temp. Water was good XR, must have cleared up since you were thru.

But then 8 zillion sandflies dragged me into the tussock & chewed the crap out of me.
    Damn they were thick there!

Parked up off the track, zero neighbours, lovin it!

Ah! You crossed the stream. Yes, they were much cleaner over the other side. The big one back upstream a little way on the Mog side was the soupy one.

Hope you spot some wildlife closer to dusk. We saw quite a few down on the banks of the Waiau. Would be relatively easy to get the mog down there. No overhanging veg to worry about, but the zig zag up out of that river valley downstream of you may have some tight zigs and zags for a mog sized vehicle. Then again, the track was put in with a pretty big dozer
