Not 100% it is the diff.
I'll clarify a few things and see where that gets us.
Definitely out of 4wd.
I have owned it for the last 18months and had no river crossings in my time. But likely that it did crossing before i got it. However I did a diff oil change when i got it in April last year. Auto transmission was serviced at the same time.

Pinion doesn't seem to have any play in it.
No whine at lower speeds or running around town. Seems to be at higher speeds and when you are putting the foot down/heavy load i.e going uphill.
The truck does not get a lot of work. Driven once a week by the missus as I work out of Laos or Australia chasing gold. Flying out on Monday for a stint till NY so will head to the local mechanic to get his opinion this arvo.
