    Reusing Auto Engines.

    OK, I'm bored, and thinking.

How difficult is it to get an auto engine running out of the original vehicle to run something else? Since the early 90's, or there abouts, most have a computer management system , intake, sensors, pressure sensors, exhaust sensors, ..... and a whole heap of wiring going to a computer tucked away somewhere. Looking at mid 90's to mid to late 00's.

I think the common solution is to buy an aftermarket computer like a Link to run it all and then it is tuneable also.

its not too much of a problem, you can run original computer or after market, re vinning can be the problem.many lotus 7, homebuilt, and race cars do it all the time.

Easy just take the loom with the engine make up some mounts and bobs your uncle. I was reading an interesting build thread on a 4wd forum the other day where they were building a pretty serious rig for extended trips into the northern territories in Aussie. They wanted a modern ute, so they started with a modern Navara, but they wanted reliability so first thing they did was turf the flashy new navara engine and shoehorned an old (but rebuilt) td27 from an early 90s terrano into it. They got there in the end but it seemed more of a nightmare than putting a modern engine in an old vehicle

Looking at putting a more modern car engine into a boat. Think it would be better than phaffing around with the rare 45+ year old one that is in there. The 90's engines seem to be damned reliable with plenty of parts. Can pick up reasonably low mileage bent vehicles for a song. Would need to work out how to hook the shaft up to the leg but that shpuldn't be too much of an issue. Would likely be lighter as a bonus.

you could go 90s but lower tech..... eg not a top end model car. plenty were around that were still simple enough to work on yourself. depending on what horsepower you want it shouldnt be that hard to do.

Yeah, that is the plan. 4 cylinder non turbo, would probably have about the same power output as the very old triple carb 6.

Would want to get something I can get closish to the original '71 170HP, which will be more like 140-150 modern HP. Computer managed fuel injection has to be better than old school carbs to keep tuned.

Will have to add on raw water pump, heat exchanger, doctor the exhaust to take the raw water after the heat exchanger. If I start with a complete vehicle everything to run the engine should be there.

Be good to hook up a hose to the sump that could be poked through the drain hole of the hull for oil changes.
