Thinking about getting a cheapie 4x4 to leave at bach in mid Canterbury high country. For fishing and hunting. Doesn't need to be registered or WOFed as will only be on the local tracks.
Spotted a 2003 Sangyong Korando for $2k. It's 2.9TD, 5 speed manual, 4wd has 2hi 4hi 4low, 228000km. Worth a go? Or are they crap? I'm not finding much info online about them apart from it's a mercedes diesel and they're not good when compared to the major brands, but they're still ok. Thoughts?
ssangyong is currently for sale by their indian owners as they arent selling very well.
Not surprised as seems they've always struggled with getting the look right. Bascially they're fugly! But looks are important for new sales.
The 2003 sure isn't pretty but I'm not bothered by that. Want something for occassional use that can sit for weeks unused and then do it's job when need be.

Get an old petrol landcrusier or Nissan patrol.Easy to tune up,start up, one with manual gear box for tow start if you have to.Cost stuff all to keep going as a hill hack.
Guy at work had one. Nothing but problems with the gearbox.
Not a bad thought, although its hard to get anything non electronic anything now days. I've got a 10W ish solar panel so could leave it connected to trickle the battery.
An old suzuki SJ would be great but they're rare and $$. Vitara/Escudo more common but again $$

i have a 2.7 diesel sangyong rexton and its awesome ,also have an 80 series 24valve manual landcruiser and the rexton tows better and goes awesome . i think they are a very underrated brand . would rate them way above chinese made of cheese vehicles

Mate got a early 2000’s 5 door vitara for $2500. 220kms. Fully road legal, new tyres, hardly seen a gravel road. So they’re out there. Gonna put tractor grips on it and rip the back out for alloy dog box to go in.

My old man has a Rexton and loves it too. Doesn't have the articulation to be much good off road (might not even have low range? not sure) but for his use as a pretty quiet and comfortable soft roader that tows a solid caravan easily it has done well. Think its had a couple of mechanical niggles to fix but no major problems, he is thinking about replacing it with a newer one.Quote:

Great wall, ssangyong, LDV etc, just avoid them. It might claim to have a Mercedes engine, but Mercedes never built it. They sold all the blocks and heads that didn't meet the standards instead of scrapping them with a big warning label notifying the defaults and the course of action to rectify, even went so far as to say "for demo use only".
Lots of the off the grid companies bought them up, and used lots, but also tried to copy and in doing so copied already at fault blocks and heads.
The end game was to reconfigure and reprogram all sorts of strange parameters into knock sensors, crank angle sensors, temperature sensors, manifold pressure and so on to make it look like it was all good.
When they failed, the engine was replaced.
I'd rather have an old Japanese diesel, that will actually get me out of the place im stuck.

Mate got a cheap Ssanyong drove nicely very fuel efficient, shat itself at approx 100 000km clutch and some other stuff.
Looked ugly the whole way.
Edit to add: not a 4wd that you can actual 4wd in
Why petrol,caus if your truck sitting out side in cold winter for a few months,diesel will start to wax up,gel up at about-14, -15c and will be a bitch to start or not start at all and youl have to change yr fuel filters and diesel.Petrol can handle those cold temperatures.Quote:

Buy a Toyota, if you haven’t got heaps of cash buy a surf with the lowest kms you can it’ll go more places and be more reliable than the ssanyong
My record for arriving at work on a Monday to find towed in Korandos with fucked timing chains is THREE. Utter garbage, don't touch them
