Great machine
Very reliable and capable 4wd
Used small tractor tyres on ours off-road
Most of the reviews I,ve seen say they have pretty poor fuel economy.
yup agree you will not have reliability issues but if an earlier model they do drink gas - small motor hauling around a bigger body at modern road speeds - but in saying that its comparative - way better than a 4.0 V8 or a 3.0 litre V6 just not as good as say a toyota yaris or starlet for comparison
fitting a set of free wheeling hubs would help? not though i want to muck around doing mods. been there done that.
@Barry the hunter yep if i go a car it will be a yaris or corrola.
Test drove the 5 door.
Cool we vehicles, but absolutely gutless.
Had to kick the shit out of it to get up some of the hills around Dunedin.
This looks like a good option.

will be looking at pre 2019 older model in the jimny. don't really need to sink a heap of money in to a second vehicle,
Greetings @bigbear,
My Jimny is almost 5 years old and averages 5.8 litres per hundred k. It is the later model with the 1,500 cc engine which may help. I don't flog it so that may help as well and don't run the AC all the time either. It also does not have any of the bolt on stuff like a snorkel for negotiating puddles in supermarket carparks or a roof rack which is almost always empty both of which hog fuel.
Regards Grandpamac.
I have 2022 Jimny FYI economy is 10l per 100km,lots of off road 11.5 has 235 75r15 and roof racks lift kit diff locks underbody protection, winch etc...yes asthmatic on open road with those mods But I just leave 5 minutes earlier than I would with a faster truck.i have thrashed it off road and all good, possibly a bit low in some conditions but diff lock worked everytime,I get up steep slopes that 70 series have to be winched up
With a 2010 era Jimny get the manual not the auto, you will need to work that stick with the M13a motor but the the fuel consumption wasn't that bad. Freewheel hubs made no difference in the scheme of things. My one was older and had a real gearstick to change into 4wd. post 2007(?) had an electronic switch controller that can play up. If you are a big unit don't bother as they are quite snug, I took out the rear seats as they were just a waste of space. Unfortunately the popularity of the new model has dragged the price of the older ones up with them.
Depending on how you drive on the road but from a mate that has has a old n new model, they are rolly az shit n handle like shit, so def no wrx lol
I’d look at something else , pretty much a quad bike with a heater, ie soft as shit and break easy
Manual gear will give you more power, say 15% to 20% increase comparing with Auto. That tiny SUV can take you to anywhere, and do `t forget the world record of the highest mountain that 4x4 can reach out at 6,500m was Jimny.
But the problem is too small, I consider this but it `s too small. You can buy it as a toy or for some particularly purposes. I am 175cm tall, weight 145 lbs, I can fit in there, but how about my wife, my fishing and camping gears?
Recently compared the new 3 door vs 5 door, the difference is huge and not in a good way! The 5 door is made in India and it really shows, handling was awful and the fit and finish on everything was shit compared to the 3 door which is still made in Japan. The rear seats in the 5 door are tiny and don't fold down nicely either.
I don't really know where the 5 door sits in the market, I get that the public asked them for it but IMO they really messed it up.
I’ve had a couple of the old ones and a new one in manual
Great off road, look cool, that’s about it. Handle like shit at anything over 80kmh, gutless and thirsty
Got an old awd 2 door rav4 that does the same thing now for 1/8th the price
underpowered, uncomfortable and uneconomic. off road they are great and go just about anywhere, onroad is a different issue as they ring their guts out at 100k
Greetings @bigbear,
When shopping for my Jimny I looked at the older 1,300cc model but decided to go for the new model as I found the older one a little cramped for my large frame. My comments are for the later model. For my use I have found it quite large enough. The back seats have never been used so there is plenty of room for the things I need to take to the range including a small portable bench rest made from a sawhorse, 4 foot screens for the chronograph etc. My old trailer, that I had for 40 years, had become too heavy for me to move so I bought a small and light Kea trailer so if it won't fit inside it goes on that. I towed it up to Taupo and back with some 1.3 x 1.2 metre targets and it went much better than expected and not much harder on petrol than normal. For my use it is ideal and would buy another in a flash.
Only you can decide what you need as what you have said is a second car for commuting Happy choosing,
Regards Grandpamac.
The newer indian made Suzuki's can be difficult to get parts for. Was told 3 month wait and $400ish for one engine mount. Part came from India. Couldn't find any aftermarket options. This was for Nana's wee 2012 hatchy thing... But the dealership said it's a long wait for most of the indian made parts.
I had one for a couple of years, went everywhere I needed it to. Hunted all over the North Island in it,might have even gotten a shag or two in it.
Have had a couple of Dodge Rams, can't remember getting lucky in either,so on that basis choose a Jimmy for sex appeal.
Sounds like they haven't come very far from the 1970's Suzuki Jimneys. Mine would go absolutely anywhere, but if it was too steep the passenger needed to get out or it would run out of ring ding dings (2 stroke 530cc engine. Soft top, bloody noisy, sitting on 5 grand @ 95kph, doing 22mpg (13L/100km for those young'ns out there.
I did own a suzuki 413 30 years ago and it went alright. I probably need to test drive one. I realize its not going to be no Hilux:P but i don't plain on traveling around Nz in it.
I am 178cm and can sleep in mine OK,seats fold to make a good bed base have a fridge etc just don't take too much gear amazing what you don't need or can comress down inside clothes sleeping bag etc
I've had a LJ 50 rag top with fabric doors a SJ 413 a Samurai still have a 3 door vitara and now also the new Jimny which is the first that I can sleep in.

I like them but they are not for everyone. When we need space or power I have 2 Nissan Safari's one with a turbo and PTO winch.
I saw a guy this week with a Jimenez 2012 tricked up a bit. Apparently he wants to upgrade the engine from a Suzuki swift to get a bit more grunt . And apparently it bolts straight in … pretty much.
The LJ50s and the early SJ413 had a small driveshaft between the engine/clutch and gearbox. Meant you could easily repower them with anything.
The jimmy from 2002ish onwards until the current model used the M13a engine. The swift used the m13a,m15a( in the current jimny) and the m16a. All 3 motors will bolt to the jimny gearbox. Just make sure you use correct computer with it and some adjustments to wiring harness as some plugs are different
Following this whole thread with interest - as I've love considered getting a Jimny.
I just acquired the latest 3 door as my main hunting wagon, the old 3.2 Navara was costing to much to run and repair suspension parts every WOF.
Goes well, will get a few extra's as finance permits, already have a trunk box storage case for the dog in the back, a red hind fitted in the back alright with all blood contained in the storage case, just removed and washed out when home, Dog liked the passengers seat with the deer in the back. Current fuel economy is 6.2L/100kms.
I even heard a sika roaring while driving quietly along a forestry track with the window wound down.
Great little trucks, veryu low on power though, especially if you go any bigger on tyres. CTB do a turbo kit though, which makes it a different vehicle.

Yep, standard at the wheels on dyno was 72kw, torque 131.9nm.
Turbo at wheels 112kw, 270.5nm torque.
Different vehicle.
I also fitted different transfer case gears, reduced high range by about 15% & low range by about 60%
Put it back in the std rev range on the road with 30" tyres, and lets you crawl around better off road.
