Hi,
I am looking at buying a vehicle that can do 95% of the road driving and 5% of light off road ( dirt track, getting out of the mud ...etc)
I am looking at the Nissan xtrail, but I have no clue as to what to get and what to avoid:
Auto or manual, diesel, turbo diesel or petrol, 2 l or 2.5 l ...etc
If some of you on the forum had experience with them and can share their knowledge that would be great.

I hired an x-trail in Tasmania last year, did a couple thousand k’s on road and it was better than I expected, being a manual diesel guy. Took a track down to a beach, the kind that gets hairier as you go till it’s too late to turn back. The last hundred metres down to the beach was hard sand covered clay, with the kind of articulating mounds you see at a demo. Wife was freaking out about getting stuck in the sand. The little x-trail cruised straight up those articulations piece of cake two wheel teetering, where my hilux probably would have needed a lot more momentum. I was impressed for what it is

We recently considered one of these to replace our station wagon that insurance wrote off. We were after a wagon with the same intentions as you and also wanting more boot space for two dogs and camping gear.
Decided the X-Trail was too long especially as it would be used as a shopping trolley and parking it in town etc would end up being a nuisance.
Ended up with an Outlander with half the kms as a similarly priced X-Trail. We don't need something too 4wdy as we have a Toyota Prado for the rough stuff.
That said I think the X-Trail is a decent compromise, it is just a lot longer than similar comparable vehicles. Would a Mitsubishi Pajero be an option?

LWB Pajero is definitely a lot bigger, I was just putting it out as an option.
Having had an X-Trail and an Outlander sitting side by side in a car yard, the X-Trail certainly seemed the larger vehicle, bar the height. I see on paper that they are actually quite comparable. The X-Trail has the largest boot/cargo space in its class which is a bonus. And a decent turning circle too.
Had one for 5 years, or so, after I sold my Terrano.
Not bad, plenty of room in the back.
I had the petrol 2 litre, auto.
Was ok, but could have done with a bit more grunt.
They were once described as a Primera on stilts. Try finding a comparison between a x-trail and RAV4. I once saw the latter quite happily pootling along Old Man Range as I explored in my D-Max.

Had an early 2006 2.5 manual, great car/ Suv never had an issue sold it too a mate who towed a motorcycle trailer with 2 trial bikes all over N.Z never missed a beat for him either.
Dependent what year you are talking about.
We have a 2015 X-trail as the wife's car and its bloody awesome.
We have the 2.4l petrol, 7 speed auto blah blah blah...
It goes bloody well, is very economical and seem to be alright in light offloading.
The con is they have low ground clearance. Perfect for fishing though.

T31 series has excellent cupholders - on the A pillars of both front occupants and then again in-door. Very useful pull-out trays in the boot beneath the loading bay. My friend who upgraded to a Touareg lamented the lack of this feature. Was a reliable vehicle for him, over 200k.
we had a 2.5 petrol manual. lots of electrical issues with it.
later models are fitted with nissans cvt and its a bloody disaster and very expensive to repair.

jatco cvt is the worst of the bunch for reliability not to mention they fee like a slipping clutch
they use a metal belt that pushes not pulls and fail very expensively

also as i remember with ours it had 205/65 tyres on it (factory standard) speedo was well off. i think we were doing 93 when speedo read 100, changed the to 205/70 and it was spot on and way more economical. but the electrical issues were ridiculous for a japanese car. alternator, mirror motors, wiper motor, window switches, central locking the list goes on.
luckily i repair all that stuff myself with no problems or it would have added up to a small fortune.
I have a 2006 petrol 2L CVT have had it off road and pretty good. not a landcruiser but does ok.
Hill descent is good if you like that kind of thing. but it will still climb with two wheels off the ground (opposing corners ) if you have the hubs locked up.
This may not be relevant, but I wouldn't buy another car that I couldn't fold the back seats down and put a camp mattress on. It's been quite handy for the occasional overnight adventure and so much better than sleeping in a tent.
Old man just traded his late model one in. Fella at the dealership said they'd had a number through for CVT problems. One with less than 100k on it cost $15k to fix. All vehicles have their issues but bugger taking the risk of an issue costing that much to fix.Quote:

If anyone is still looking at this for xtrail (old). Ours is 2004, 2.4L auto. Nearly at 300km now (just cursed myself).
Only issues so far, transfer case shit itself and replaced. Most likely my wife ignored my explaining how 4WD works and she's used full lock on the road a few times. She's reached for the button a couple of times when I've been driving up Ruapehu for skiing.
Secondly, sensor failure on the crankshaft. Now this one was scary. Luckily in town, but the computer which is obviously more clever than us immediately cuts the engine (it wasn't a catastrophic failure either, just a sensor warning). Just brilliant when you are halfway through a roundabout and suddenly having the steering nearly pulled out your hands with no power steering and of course brakes now flaccid. No idea if this kind of computer logic is common across other types of car, or just from this era or what. But thankful it didn't happen out on the open road.
x-trail faults we experienced: anything electric/electronic , was the worst vehicle ever for stupid little faults like window switches, wiper motors etc. but the killer is the damn exhaust manifold develops cracks right next to the o2 sensor.
You guys are scaring the crap out of me. I recently bought a 2014 2.5 petrol with the Xtronic CVT. 93k in like new condition. I did the front disc's and pads straight away, just put a set of Copper ATs on it and at 98k it is booked for a full Nissan Dealer service etc Monday. The old tires got me up and down muddy tracks and over wet paddocks without any trouble but just standard road tires and on last legs rubber wise. Did a economy check from full tank at BP Te Kuiti yesterday to Central Auckland off-ramp exactly 200km. As I hit the off-ramp and stopped at the lights it registered 8.7 L/100km. 95 grade. I cruise around the 100k without pushing, all way down Sth Mway at 105k, no blockages. I bought it because I like the shape of that model better than the 2014 new model, great load space with flat seats, decent motor and, believe it or not, a good rep for reliability. Not so fussed on the CVT or lack of low ratio.However, a Landrover it is not. It is a very comfortable ride and well appointed. Maybe I'll change my mind after Monday..
nissan plus jatco cvt is pure evil, get rid of it asap. seriously they are pure crap
I used to own nissan x-trail several years ago. Quite a good car, comfortable, non-expensive. I was totally satisfied all the time. I decided to sell it because I wanted to buy a new car - MB. Anyway I recommend you to check nissan x-trail (2011) manuals http://nissan.manymanuals.com/cars/x-trail-2011 to find more info and some tips about this car before buying.
