Incidentally, the reason they use English for the pace notes is because the Finnish words for 'left' and 'right' have two syllables and take longer to say. Many Finnish drivers/codrivers do - I guess like most of Europe they learn 2 or 3 languages including English from a young age, which would make it easier to adapt.
Kankkunen is one of the all-time greats though - such a natural driver, its like the car is just an extension of his body. He has also set world speed records on ice (330km/h) and in a tractor (130km/h, on snow).
