are they all the same? i.e. not very good?
is it worth grabbing a used LSD head for 300 bucks to replace my open rear diff

$300 is cheap
Strip it, check and reassemble with tougher springs
Run proper LSD diff oil or it will slip like a non LSD diff
A big fast bullet beats a little fast bullet every time
I think they're only ok. Nissans are better. Just grab a locker for not much more
You can rebuild them and they will still be crap
The Biggest Room is the Room for Improvement
Leave the rear alone just throw an air locker in the front
New they are pretty good but within a 100tho they are pretty loose usually.
Easy enough to shim one up tho.
I have a hilux lsd lieing around....it was out of a 3lt but bearing journals have been machiened down to suit a 3l ln 106 lux.
I had it in the front so its loose but can be shimmed up if it is of use to you.

Don't do it. They are almost useless off road. I brought my 40 series on the basis it had one. Useless so I pulled it apart, sandblasted the clutch plates and put in a shim. Still useless. Paid $500 to get it professionally rebuilt by a bloke who claimed to know what he was doing. Still useless. Put an auto locker in the back (not useless) and put the lsd in the front. Still useless but now it makes the steering heavy when 4wd is engaged.
If it's still in a vehicle then jack up one read wheel and spin it. If you can spin it then it's useless.
Basically they need torque to lock up at all and they never fully lock up. If you are stuck in a mud hole then there won't be enough torque to lock it up enough for it to matter. The toyota one is worse than the nissan one.
Buy an air locker if you have enough money or a factory locker from a wrecker. If you can handle the weird road driving characteristics then buy a auto locker.

Yip you are right the Toyota LSD diffs don't stay LSD for long. Better to just chuck in an auto locker. My old hilux went throught two rear diffs none of which stayed LSD for long.
Ok will get a Harrop-Eaton E locker when I can be bothered spending money on it and pulling the rear axle ie around 2018
Factory options on toyotas.....very rare but you can get a factory elec rear locker in a 106 hilux even.
they do play up mainly due to not being used and/or water ingress.
quite common to upgrade the older cruisers with 80 series live axles to get disk brakes all round and locking diffs front and rear tho many ditch the elec and go manual cable operation
