    Toyota Surf

I've had a 1994 non intercooled turbo 3litre Toyota Surf for some 6yrs or so now, it's coming up to 159thousand kms, had it since 70kms
It' hasn't given me any trouble but Dinos thread got me thinking , maybe I should spend some money on it to
help avoid this cracked head thing people talk about
I am not exactly handy as a mechanic, I do know that if you turn the key on and it doesn't go then there is probably something wrong.

It has a 1KZ-TE motor is Auto and as I said neary 160th kms.
I've been told it has the bigger radiator. I've some questions perhaps the more knowlegeable could help with

1- how do I know when the injectors need done and should they be done about now.
2- would fitting a proper snorkel be of any benefit, if so what type is best.
3- I'm fairly certain my LSD doesn't work and have had the oil changed but it still doesn't seem to go, when I have it in normal two wheel drive and one back wheel is off the ground it goes nowhere , the wheel off the ground just spins, I have to put it in 4x4high to get the front wheels to drag me forward.
Do I actually need the LSD to work?
4-would fitting a better exhuast help avoid the head cracking, if so what should I do.
    5- Anything else ?

I've serviced it every 6mths since I've owned it regardless of the amount of kms I've travelled and it has had new filters every 10thou.I fitted a trans cooler the day after I bought it and it has a turbo timer which I use.
    cheers.

Your lsd won't work if tire is off the ground. It just puts a tiny amount of power to the other wheel. They tighten up as power is put threw the diff so need some traction on both wheels.
At those kms its probably pretty worn. No you don't need it and its unlikely to shit itself.
Old school rule of thumb was injector service every 100tho k
Dunno about electronic injection but it would probably like having them done.
    Exhaust and snorkel won't hurt.
Clean out radiator and air con radiator.
Maybe run a flush threw and replace coolant.
Keep an eye on gauges when driving.
Would have thought if it was goin to crack head it would have by now but Im no expert on those motors.

    Injectors every 100,000 ks
Does allow for clean air if driving dirt roads regularly.
Toyota LSD's are shit, complete shit. Fit a locker.
yes, as long as you fit a nice dump pipe from the turbo also - getting heat away from the motor always helps.

The 3lt motor should be sweet for 400,000 k's with out any major issues .
Wouldn't worry about LSD,problem solved when you lock the front diff;in.
The big exhaust is a definite plus & the snorkel will as said be great on dusty roads
nothing gonna kill you engine performance quicker the lungs full of gravel dust.
A bottle of Wyns injector clean every 6 months keeps thing working ,as does
putting good quality oil in the sump ,cheap shit gonna cost in time .
Turbo's don't like cheap oil apparently ,he said $1500 later .

A diff lock works in the diff you put it in. Ie usually rear but can also do front.
You can get auto lockers, air or electric selectable lockers.
With front and rear locked you will keep goin forward till some thing breaks, you fall over, or all 4 wheels are spinning .

Unless your contemplating serious 4wding i wouldnt bother with the expense.

Fitted ARB to my last HiLux. Fuel consumption got better more torque down low . Noticeable differences as it must help it breathe better
The air intake original plastic from under the guard chokes the shit out of the air intake . You won't regret it

get your radiator cleaned out and viscous fan hub reoiled, this is the biggy that kills a lot of the heads when age creeps in.

This 1 is parked correctly & right way up .

Think the snorkel not only help the engine breathing but improves fuel economy ,
this one seems to run on the smell of an oily rag but its a 2.4
