    Tyres

What's up with the retail tyre industry in NZ? Seems very secretive. Almost no online sales, no listed prices, etc. Have to call people to get a quote just to find out what a tyre costs. Why is it different from any other product, or any other country? No shortage of online tyre sales in Oz, US, etc. Not very competitive here

Yeah I walked into a shop the other day for a quote, not helpful at all to be fair. Told them they were dreaming. Some dick tapping away on his calculator

Tyreshopoline.co.nz or hyperdrive are who I normally I deal with. Missus wrecked two tyres on our car last month - must have hit something. Anyway, due to not having time to wait for replacements from online, I just took the rims into a local franchise and told them to replace with the same tyres, didn't ask price as it needed doing. Quality 18 inch 255 wide tyres aren't cheap anyway, but it ended up the tyres cost $95+gst each more than the exactly the same tyre off hyperdrive...I was a bit pissed off to be fair.

Yeah tyreshoponline don't stock the ones I want (BFG KO2 33/10.5R15), and Hyperdrive don't have an agent on the West Coast... local store has an ok price but it's annoying having so few options & not a very competitive market

I just don't look at the bill... It hurts whatever you get. Have 3 sets of tyres and 2 rims for my truck and hope that will last a while. Boss had a set of brand new $400 coopers on his Hilux, did less than 200kms and slashed through a sidewall

Put a set of antlers through the sidewall of the daihatsu terios (long story) $245 mistake more than I paid for 16" m/t on my truck

after trying multiple paces both online and in shop i now shop at only one place here in chch. the issue is you can buy tyres from so many manufacturers, but the specs and quality vary so much its best to trust someone who "sees you right" instead of the cheapest option. and even then there are differences, i bought one pair of tyres from a manufacturer and they were made in germany, 2 months later identical tyres made in belgium.
one thing i will say is that if someone offers you gt radials tell them no way !

That looks an odd tyre size.

Tall enough to reach the firm bit underneath and narrow enough to apply enough pressure for grip.

Its like that here in gisborne to. Have driven to hawkes bay as it was cheaper buying tyres from there including fuel and road users. But there must be a fair mark up because they sure know how to discount if they have to

I bought tyres at the end of the month on the understanding there were sales targets to be met. Although I live in the B.O.P. The tyres were bought and fitted in Palmy where I was at the time. I had been (called returned) phoned by sales rep form Bri*ge st*** 's help desk through whom I'd originally enquired for a price. Short version is I had 4x 17" A/T's fitted and balanced for a tad over $800 vs B.O.P. Quote of $1200. Palmy fitter told me the mother company reimburses them for any $$ loss.

Gimp; best price on BFG's, I've found, have been Beaurepairs; I usually ask for a cash sale on the best discounted account they can give me. I'm onto my fourth set now.
