Where does everyone insure their off-road capable vehicles? My hilux was insured with Toyota but now that my wife is moving on it’s no longer the most cost effective option.
The ute has a good chunk of ARB mods such as suspension lift, bullbar, winch, snorkel etc etc (nothing requiring a cert) and it needs to be covered off road.
I think we were with AMI before Toyota but I can’t remember.

Will FMG insure an individual privately owned vehicle? If I remember right the last time we looked to go to them they wouldn’t do it as it was individually privately owned as above, not a company or anything.
State is the other 1 as long as u declare the vehicle goes off rd
Well they insured both my "individually owned 4wd's" with no issues at all. Never had to claim for an off road whoopsie as I am a bit of a nana off road!Quote:

State for me, but admittedly I don't go where it's too rough.
I've got my off road truck insured with Star Insurance, they are excellent for modified vehicles, motorcycles and classic cars.
Best bet would probably be just to give them a call. Explain your mods and vehicle use, expectations etc. They are bloody good to deal with [emoji106]Quote:

FMG but mines unmodded and is the base model as well as privately owned and always has been. I don't do serious offroading just rough gravel roads.
Have claimed from for wife backing into it and they dealt with the claim against to bus that swiped me.
Previous ute they made a windscreen place replace a canopy with a new one after said place stuffed me around for weeks and then made a new window for the canopy but had taken the trim and promptly lost it.
I've just gone to FMG for my Cruiser. Got air bag suspension and a hoist.
I've got everything through a broker and my premiums for farm and business are north of fifteen thousand dollars. NZI gave me grief over the modifications on the cruiser. So got a quote off FMG. Their response to me emphasising the mods was "yeah no problem". And they trimmed five hundred dollars off the premium.
I'll definitely be getting a quote for everything from them.
We have everything with FMG awesome to deal with and all sporting goods are replacement cost not like AMI.

Our broker is AON. We went with them when FMG wouldn't help with some of our odd farm equipment. Mind you FMG wasn't the only one that was no help. We did get an FMG hat from them though :-)
Who carries our cover can vary year to year. When I rolled my tractor there were 2 companies on our policy.
May be worth asking about Ute insurance.
FMG won't insure if your not rural anymore. Tried them.
I've gone with Rothbury Insurance Brokers.
They're the ONLY 4wd specialist insurer agent and will include any and all mods as long as you list them.
Also majority of insurers will not cover you if you are off a formed gravel road.
Rothbury will cover you even if you're well off the beaten path and recovery is included. Unlike other insurers where you have to get it to tarmac before they'll recover you.
Pricing is very similar to mainstream Insurance cos.
My hilux for example with all the mods and extras, full cover, glass extention is less than my sons Vitz 1300 auto car. Go figure.
Went in the other direction, FMG were close to $1000 a year under ION who we had been with for many years without getting a quote from outside. More than happy with FMG, none of the hassles we had insuring 4 wheelers that were always a problem with IOM in the later years.Quote:

AON is one outfit I would not touch with someone else's bargepole - totally incompetent and will shaft you as quick as emphasize their bottom line and profit margin to their management. Although it does make the fact I ended up costing the fools several thou over what they thought they were going to save a little sweeter - just compensation for making me fight I feel. Their (very obvious) fluckup that caused it too - although it was apparently everyone else's fault, Jacinda's fault, Covid's fault and probably the fault of the little boy who lives down the lane as well as in no way shape or form their fault...
All well, that's your opinion and you know the old saying...
We've been with them for over 20 years. They covered our odd ball farm equipment when the likes of FMG and the other mainstream outfits would not plus they paid out on a very expensive tractor repair when I tipped it over.
All without hassle at I time when I was super stressed out over my stupidy and the damage and the last thing I wanted was a run around. That's the sort of cover you want. Top marks to them.

I know this is a very "how long is ya piece of string" question , but what is most run of the mill Insurance companies idea of "off road" is driving up a farm track, a gravel road or going down the beach off road ?

If you think there is a grey area in your ute policy, ring them up talk to a boss person, write down what they said and email them back your understanding of what they said and your understanding of the policy.. Get the company spokesperson to confirm by email what you have said is correct [or incorrect] and keep that copy in your insurance folder. For example if you do alot of driving on farm tracks... It may seem like a hassle at the time to establish if driving on farm tracks is covered by them but it will be way more hassle to sort it when your truck is at the bottom of a gully and they say 'no its not insured for driving on private farm tracks"
It's very dependent on the policy and also the assessor at the time. I specc'd to the insurance agent we use that the ute I have in the business is used off formed roads and for accessing sites for work purposes - one outfit considered a paddock to not be a 'formed road' so there's a bit of variation there. As I said to the broker fella, does that mean we aren't insured driving on the grass on our lifestyle block?
The business verses personal status is one that irritates me.
Picking up goods in town for farm use is personal (but tax wise I can claim it). Put a spade or chainsaw on the back and take it to work fencing, but not use the vehicle for fencing is business.
So I put it to them that everyone who puts a work computer in their car to take to work should be paying business insurance rates. Still waiting for an answer. Which I doubt I'll get due to canceling the policy
Yes, I had the similar question asked of them re business vs personal - it was personal for me to drive to the work site apparently, but then I asked if my kit and tools were covered that I had to cart in the vehicle. Ahhhhhhh....... Hmmmm..... Ahhhhhh - hang on, are you an employee? Yes, but I invoice for days worked and sort out the tax and leave etc myself. Still waiting for the reply to that one - it was just easier to go full contractor than put up with the 'it's too hard why are you doing this to me' routine.
I know FMG pay out for off road in ute I tipped mine over on a steep ridge no track round & rolled 3 time into the gully they payed out fast with no piss rounds I mite filt they where a bit light on the value off the ute tho & they payed the farmers invoice for pulling ute out & taking it back to the road with his tractor.

Just received my renewal notice from AMI for my ~6.5k Terrano.. increasing from $524.03 to $740.24, on top of an $80-odd increase last year
More than a 41% increase.. guess it’s time to change insurance co.
