Used both. AA by a long way- they check engine compression.
I got an AA one on my surf and they missed some stuff that it failed the next warrant on, which was expensive (seatbelts etc)
I've used AA5 times, very thorough. VTNZ once and never again!
neither,try your local garage, many vtnz staff are not qualified mechanics its an old persons home.

Only one time out of maybe 5-6 that the AA has let me down,years ago I bought an XR6 ute unseen in Christchurch .
Report was good, met the dealer half way to my town to exchange then noticed, cracked headlight, small tears in the vynil on the console,no Cigartte lighter in the cigerette lighter hole, various other small things that weren't pointed out in the report, like the thing shook like 40 bastards when you drove it 120km[ in there defense it didn't at 100] . Fixed with wheel ballancing.
Went to my local guy here and showed him the repot and the vehicle, he complained,
The AA canme to the party and replaced the headlight, found me a cig lighter and got the Vynil welded. all for nothing.
They told me the inspector no longer worked for them.
I've been back for AA checks since and would continue to do so.
I d say it depends if you sell or you buy the vehicle :-)
