im in need of some new mud tyres for my ute, anyone running kuhmo kl71s or maxxis bighorns? how are they for wear? i was looking at those as theyre not too badly priced or any others that are good and not too expensive. i do alot of offroading, rivers, mud, clay, rocks so i need something hardy
I put Achilles desert hawk xmt on my safari recently, 15 inch rims, 33's. Have good sidewall tread to stop rocks cutting.They have been really good in my view off road and on. A little roadnoise but muddys do that. 370 dollars each fitted at my local tyreland. Service there was excellent too.
Maxxis you can't beat them for value and the amount of kms you get out of them.
been running bighorns in a 33 12.5 good tyre get lots of road use as it my daily driver got about 50km out of a set

Mickey Thompsons MTZ Baja 33" on my landcruiser, flipping excelent grip and low road noise.
Maxxis trepador, so far great in mud grass and gravel. Not much more noise than my old roadctyres but alot more grip too

How do you find the gearing and brakes? Mine is on 33s and has enough grunt but brakes are not too flash with a trailer on.Quote:

I was a fan of the maxxis buckshot mudders until I got some of the bighorns (764). They aren't as loud as the buckshots. Grip send to be pretty good. Only had them for a few kms
Got KL-31's on a 2010 Ranger. Done about 15,000km and they are about half worn. Got older pattern 33" BFG M/T's on my Wrangler and done 40,000 and they are only half worn.
I have 15" Hancock dynapro MTs. Cheap and wear exceptionally well. A lot of the forestry guys run them and they do a lot of fast kms on gravel. Seem to go the distance well.
I have never had them in serious mud though so can't really comment on thier performance in that regard.
I've had great wear out of Hancook, about 100,000 out of AT's. The Mudstars were great off road and were down about 4mm after 45,000 km; if you find them let me know. Mate has KL71's on his ute and they are wearing very fast and aquaplane really badly above 60km/h in even the slightest surface water.Quote:

If you can stretch the pocket wide then I'd look at Coopers on the top shelf. Very good tyres. Coopers also do a cheaper range called Hercules that are getting good reviews.

Mainly fitting hankook rt03 at work , gone away from buckshots
As they tend to chop out quick on shingle
Coopers and bfg are good aswel if u have cash
Hiflys and good rides are good cheap MUDs aswell
i ended up getting some bighorns, talk about break the bank. they guys that did the swap told me they use them and know people that have got 50,000+ from them. sounds good to me!

I am the king of rough on my gear, half worn is 3/4 fucked, mine are half worn now @ 45k and I expect to get another 20 before un warrentable but will replace shortly as they are near the end of there life to be any use off road. I am the kind of dick that cant resist lighting up the tires occasionally and that hasn't hurt their life too dramaticly.
If you want good mud(actually all terrain) tires stump up for bfg end of story, everything else turns wet tarseal into ice or is bald before you have filled the tank.

I will admit to not having tried new hankooks, old ones I had were crap as were the old kumhos (tho they lasted, the new kumhos are ok on wet tar just barely but wear like hell!)

interesting read, im about to purchase a new set of muds 31x10.5x15 for my triton, my two choices were hancook dynapro m/t or the kumho kl71, i read the kumhos were good wearing? apparently not, we see alot of vehicles come thru work fitted with the hancook and they seam to wear very well if rotated, havent had any experience with kumhos
If you want good wearing definitely not the KL71 ,good in clay/puggy mud with its open pattern, passable grip on rock/wet tarseal, horrific wear rates.
Been running some 32" bighorn 764s for a while now pretty happy with them ,,,,,get me in and outta the sh#t
BFG started to fall off the game in the last few years especially on a cost per k basis.
Coopers are a good bit of rubber especially there AT3 pattern.
BIG fan of the Nitto Terragrappler as a A/T tyre.
Mud wise I like the Cooper stmaxx,Hankook RT03 and Achilles XMT.
Don't get me wrong there's plenty of other decent brands but those are my preferences :thumbsup:
