WHAT BIKE FOR A 9YR OLD BOY

I'm after a bit of advice guys on what bike for my 9yr old. He's got a DRZ70 and he has outgrown it, I was looking at a good 2nd hand KX65, Ktm65 or husky cr65 but thought a crf100 might be alright. It will be used around the farm and trail rides no comps until he gets more confidence. What are your thoughts?

BMX........ but 2nd xr100 you can always put larger sprocket on rear to gear it down if top end speed to fast for your liking.
with adults you supposed to get two guys to lay bike across your leg and see if you can get out from under it to determine if its too big for you....strange how we dont consider same for young folk....

Yeah thought about the weight of the bike and if he could get out from under it that's what originally put me off the 4 strokes and onto the 65cc two strokes

scrub bars across infront of motor???? like some farm bikes have might help with leg issue.... speaking of farm bikes that mightnt be a bad place to look as there are whole range of them now that the wee brown fellas working on farms are riding...your 9-10 year old wont be much smaller..... and it will give you a year or two before he out grows it completely and when he does at least you will still have bike you can use.... kids=money pits.

Unless he is racing or at least using it on a proper track and jumping I'd avoid the 65s, they're not really made for riding around a farm, they're a different kind of beast.

CRF or XR would be my pick for mucking around on a farm and the odd trail ride.

A farm bike with a low seat height would be my pick. Can often drop the height a little by raising the fork tubes at the front and playing with the suspension adjustments in the back.

Take him to a few shops to check sizes and options. A Honda CRF110 is about the same physical size as a CRF70...

    Could look at a TT-R110, or a CRF125

A KLX 110 L may be a good choice, its a bit taller than the standard KLX110. I have a mate whos 9 and 10 year olds just got a KLX110 L for xmas, and it is perfect. They're exactly what you suggest your boy will be doing.

I would shy away from a "farm type" bike if your boy wants to get into trail riding and mx, they are too heavy. Even older models are 'that' much heavier.

New kids bikes are truly designed as kids bikes, with dimensions and weights suited for kids. Pretty much all are electric start and very user friendly.

Nothing wrong with KTM's, the wee two strokes are a lot of fun, light, cheap to maintain and fix, easy to fix, good for him to learn how to maintain if he continues to love mx bikes.

If he is growing fast I'd tend to buy bigger engined than smaller, you can always lower the bike as the others have said, and get more use out of it. I was racing and thrashing on trails a CR125 when I was 12...from age 16 I was on a CRF250, 18 had a CRF450 and have never gone smaller.

Reliability wise, kids bikes are all much the same, comes down to dealer support for most people...

    ....Honda for resale
