Thread: What caliber........... boat.

Seeing all the fun and adventures you fullas are having with boats, I’m asking some noob questions.
Growing up there was a boat in the garage and we used to get together with others and have a heap of fun ourselves, fishing and waterskiing.
Wondering what the pros and cons are for each.

My thoughts......
I’m thinking a jet would be good, but will probably hardly ever get it in a river, so outboard would be more logical.
I thought a jet could be cheaper motor servicing than an outboard, due to it just being a car motor, so any back yard mechanic should be able to work on it.
What are the approx service costs for a outboard vs jet.

Ongoing running costs...
Jet boats have impellers, wear rings ...... How long do they last, expected life, and what other consumables.
Do outboards have lower day to day running costs.
Fuel use? Only looking at a smaller engine/motor, but which would use more fuel?
It wouldn't get out much, occassional fishing trips and towing a skier, kids in biscuit etc
I hate what sea water does to machinery, so will be fresh water only

Not looking at spending a fortune, so it will have been someone else's which has been rolled, bowled and arseholed, so what else should I be looking for. I've heard older fiberglass can get rotten or something, so what's that about
I know I'm trying to compare 270 with 7mm08, but some of you may have had both and got some answers.

In my experience I use a jetboat more but probably due to where I live and play.

My mclay with a 4 stroke has cost me nothing since I bought it but a service which I got done for cheap by an ex merc mechanic working at the local garage.

It is very cheap to run so far. (4stroke)
I use it in both salt and clear and there are no issues if you look after them and run them in fresh as soon as possible.
I just back mine down to the river in front of home and wash it down and run the motor.
I reckon a good outboard is lower maintenance and cheaper in the longrun.

So what you should be hearing is the 708 option just makes a lot more sense and is a lot more useful.overall against the 270 ...

for what its worth we have a plain jane 13' tinny and now have a 15hp 2stroke on it....it will do 39kmph with 2 adults and 2 dogs so should comfortably drag a bickie along if you werent trying to be a hoon and tip someone out...it will take care of any lake fishing we ever want to do and if its to rough or choppy for it we shouldnt be out on water. we have caught loads of fish from it and it owes us nothing...I believe now we have a 15 I possibly COULD use 20ltrs of fuel in a weekend but it would be a big one.... you stick say a 140hp on back of a boat and you will use that in a couple of hours if you lucky. horses for courses...work out what you really want to do and go backwards from there.

Should be able to like own posts...

Yip, I’ve been told the cheapest one is your mates one, just throw him fuel money and abit of sweat cleaning up afterwards.

If you seen me drive one you would workout I am anything but wise

Haven't seen him for a while on here but @Gerald is a sharp boatie with both jet boat and outboard.

I hava 5.2 pontoon with 90 Yamaha 2 stroke. Service is pretty basic o them they are pretty simple engines. Mine hasnt cost me anything significant other than when ove wanted to do upgrades. Using it in the salt a lot means the trailer does take a hiding and that seems to be where my biggest bills are likely to come from

Back in the day my uncle had a 135 Chrysler pushing 16-18ft boat along at 55ish mph. Not fun falling off on the outside corner when skiing...think bounce, bounce, dive, pop up gasping and ski comes along and snots you on the swede type fun
We had a Sea Nymph 16ish with a 70or80 Johnson
Other uncle had a fireball with a 50 on it.
Used to fill up all the tanks onboard, and also a 44 gallon drum. Lasted 3 days. Fuel was cheap then.
Looking around the 50- 70 size on 3.6ish metre boat. Something small enough to have cheapish fun with the kids, but big enough for when the lake cuts up to make land

I have a 6.2 HT, with a 150HP 4 stroke merc.
Cruise at 22 knots, and use 20-22 litres per hour.

Never been used in fresh water, and prob won't ever (apart from bar crossings).

A service is $400 ish and at 100 hours.

Cheers that’s not to outlandish. I had no idea but just thought that being a specialised type motor, you pay through the nose. I could of course take the next step and ask a service man.
