what size aux motor would suit a 5m pontoon?
4to8 I'd say
Do you need one?
Yea -6-8hp
I have only ever needed an aux once a 6hp on a 6m took about 4 hours to cover 15 miles in perfect weather.
So if weather is bad and against you reach for the radio cos you will be going backwards!
My advice is if you know the history of your main and it is good, keep up the matanance, use it,get a good marine radio and flares and spend the money you would have spent on an aux that will rot on the back of your boat on fishin g gear and fuel ;)
haha yeah well that is a nice thought i guess the main motor is a 75 merc, its mint been well looked after. the guy i bought it off said he used to go 50-60 miles offshore with only the main motor, thats fucking mental if you ask me. tells you he had confidence in it tho
Yep, when I said I was going to buy an Aux for my boat to its previous owner he asked if I had a spare motor for my car?? So I follow VC's school of thought, I don't skimp on the maintenance ever, Have flares, EPIRP, VHF, Cellphone Carry spare fuel. Dual batteries, ya da ya da ya da. And about to join local coastguard. If it breaks and I need a tow then I won't feel bad calling them but it is unlikely as the Yamaha SWS are fairly Reliable motors anyway
got a 7.5 on the back of my figlass dominator, 5mtr fiberglass.
with it on full noise I can get about 8 kmph on a flat calm lake.
an aux is there for trawling at low speeds, quite and cheap running. that they could get you home in a pinch is a bonus but I would rather rely on my main, than hope to have calm enough weather to trawl back to the ramp when the big motor shits it.
I have done plenty of fishing going to all sorts of far reaching spots with no help potentially for days, this is the first boat I have had that has a aux.

I've got a 8 hp on my 5.6 fibreglass boat, use it for trolling, it's got enough grunt to control the boat in the wind, bugger when you have a smaller motor and can't fight the wind
Be less helicopter crashes if they did carry an Aux motor:ORLY:
I think some helicopters do have a back up motor. Pretty sure that's what they were saying on that heli rescue program over in England
Generally so far locally you seem to be able to tell the boats which may have issues by the way they look / general condition. I would suspect their Aux's would be no different, we had one come in with a wasps nest in it!!
Also most Auxs are really too small to be useful on anything but a calm day with no wind and tide. They don't have enough oooomph to properly and safely control the direction of travel.
My motor might one day give me trouble but I will have done everything to try and avoid it. If we are going way offshore there would be more than one boat going anyway.
ive got a 8hp aux on my 4.3m stabi,
i am simply not prepared to risk me and missis being stuck out at sea on the WC with a failed engine, not with a couple of rug rats at home,
ive needed to use the aux once on the 6m fyran and it has a well maintained honda four
yea i have a 5hp for a smaller dingy and a 5.2 senator
the aux never goes on
it would be a waste of time for how far out I go
good well maintained main motor is where its at
my dads one just costs him money and never goes when he needs it to thru lack of use
I'm still a believer in an aux motor , as a well maintained motor can still fuck out from failed $5 switch / relay or whatever . Yes I agree 30 miles off shore not going to get you home . But when it turns ugly at least it may face you in the direction of oncoming waves . And inshore keep you off the rocks , my 4 hp does and has .
Good radio is your aux
Another point to note is if using as a auxiliary is to run a low pitch prop to unload the motor and let it rev up to its power range .

I just run twin 60hp mariners on my 18ft cat, heaps of grunt and if one fails i can still get up on the plane with only 1 motor.
Yep, more maintenance but if you using it for trolling you only run one at a time so put half the hours on them.
Half the worry, i know they will get me home!
Row row row ya boat gentle down the stream, merily merily merily merily life is but a dream
only trouble with twins is if you have fuel problem(and that's most likely of all problems)
you still have no motor.

My motors are fed separately from 4 x 25l tote tanks, run 2 at a time, has capacity for 6!
How do 2 strokes handle idling for a couple of hours while fishing? Or is it best to turn them off
I believe they are twin engine so they don't crash onto hospital roofs if engine fail .
No, both the same way, they also run off separate batteries that can be bridged to start either motor, and failing that i can take off the cover and pull start them if both batteries die.
The hulls are filled with 1 litre bottles and are sealed units in 3 compartments either side so no bilge but can't take on enough water to sink if you get a crack in one.
Built for beach launching it has a wet deck and low sides so even if a wave breaks over the boat it can't hold enough water to sink it and the water will drain off.
She is pretty safe and stable!

Pics I have at the moment, pretty common way of setting up boats in South Africa as our coast guard is non existant and we beach launch through big surf on remote beaches!
Luckily we don't "need" that level of insurance here in NZ!
Iv allways been interested in cats for their inherent stability but they never seem to fit my criteria that looks shit hot
Im a ruff bugger tho so id need ali
Haha, yeah, at least the hulls are reinforced with stanless steel along the bottom so you can power it through the shore break and beach it, then just use the breakneck to pull it off the sand rather than getting stuck trying to pull it out the water.
The motors have beach kits so they just kick up when you hit the sand!
She is a work in progress, had been pretty neglected when i bought it, still a bit more work to do on her!
Just ordered a 7.5 pitch prop for my 8hp (on a dingy) Got the motor off trade me and it had been on a yacht so was de pitched to 6.5

Hey @Bill999, here is a review of the model that replaced my one if you are interested, the other ones that are interesting are the Mallard Cobra Cat and the Invader Cat. :)
